If you have a few minutes, this AMA link contains some automated letters to your congressmen (and women) asking for an exemption for ATV/bike manufacturers from the new lead law passed by the CPSC. The law was intended to prevent children putting imported lead painted toys into their mouth, but has now expanded to include all ATVs, dirtbikes, gear including helmets, chest protectors, clothing, etc, and all spare parts for these machines. Child has been defined as being 12ys old and under. Items such as gear will eventually be okay’d, but only after third party testing ($$$) which will put a lot of shops under even more financial stress than they are now due to the economy. The result of this has forced all motorcycle shops to pull inventory off the shelves, and basically taking away a good size market segment from them. This will only further hurt small business America at a time when small businesses can’t afford to lose any more. As silly as it sounds, kids chewing on bike parts, this whole thing is for real and you can not go into any motorcycle shop right now to buy items for kids. Spread the word, as we need to get as many people voicing their opinion on this to get this mess straightened up. Race season is almost here, and right now the kids are going to be deprived of good family fun. I don’t want to turn this into a DEM/REP political argument, because both sides are involved. Also please keep in mind, this is not a statement against the law in its entirety, since most of us still want lead laws to protect our youth. This is simply asking for exemptions for the ATV/Motorcycle manufacturers because these machines still need lead in some of the parts for safety and performance. They are after all complex machinery with internal combustion engines, and not rubber chew toys for infants.
