Help!

i recently rolled my 60(new trail rig) and am currently cruiser-less. I am a college student and the only way for me to afford a new veichle is to get my mom to help me pay. She is 100% against me having a 60 for a DD. So i must come up with all the good reasons i can to convence her that a 60 is not a bad DD. I have driven a 60 since i was 16 an i cant imagine driving anything else.

My reasons so far :

Great friends
Good connections
I can do all the work as opposed to all that electris stuff in newer cars
i can use my lift and good parts off my rolled cruiser, then sell the rest
Much cheaper than a newr truck
Lower insurance
Unique
great for camping

come on guys i need all the reasons i can get!!!!!1

Why is she dead set against you owning something that is the same as you have had for a daily driver???

What are her reasons for wanting something else so we can come up with arguments for that as well.

well when i was 16 we didnt have the money to get a truck for me and my dad had his old 84 land cruiser broke down in the garage for the last 8 years and she said that if i wanted a truck to rebuild the cruiser or when the lottery.

She didnt know that i would be sucked into the very addicting life of Land Cruisers. For the last 2 years she has tried everything to try to get me to sell it.

I think she was happy when i rolled it.

Her reasons are:
money-pit
unreliable
cant get full insurance coverage on it
ugly

I think you'll have some convincing to do. How about:

"How many other vehicles do you think would have protected your son in a rollover as well as my '60 did?"

I don't think its the actual vehicle. I think its the situations you get yourself into with the vehicle. She would probably spend an extra $5000 just to make sure you don't get yourself in a situation of danger again.

So, selling the idea will be more about behavior (your behavior), rather than the vehicle itself. What compromises would you be willing to commit to with her? If you can honestly answer that question, I think selling the cruiser idea would be much easier.

Well, usually Moms tend to be scared. You just rolled your 60 and that's probably the reason your Mom doesn't want you to have another one. Your Mom is probably happy you didn't hurt yourself and you can't blame her for that. That's her reasoning behind it. Tell her you will make a compromise. Don't lift your new truck, don't wheel it for a while and make it clear to her, it's just another SUV.

Generally I think that if you don't have the money to buy your own truck, don't wheel it. Wheeling is hard on parts and therefore expensive and I can clearly see you Mom's point of view. Unfortunately if you use somebody elses money, you are accountable for what you do and listen to somebody elses oppinion.

Actually, the "reason" has proved itself,,,,

. . . It rolled
. . . You walked away

Nothing more needs to be said . . .

i have no plans of wheeling in a 60, for camping and good times only

i wasnt even wheeling when i rolled.

Then there is no reason for her to say you shouldn't have a 60.
If her reasons are:
money-pit
unreliable
cant get full insurance coverage on it
ugly

I would respond:
money-pit - what car isn't?
unreliable - BS! Show her this webpage http://www.weltrekordreise.ch/a_starte.html The 60 is in the Guiness Book of Records! And she says it's unreliable....

cant get full insurance coverage on it - so what. You will save money on insurance cost.
ugly - Nobody can argue about taste. We think they are the most beautiful vehicles in the world. What is she driving?

Another idea: Tell her, she is right! You want a Motorcycle instead. Choose a really fast model. You will see all over sudden a 60 doesn't seem that bad... :)

Tread carefully here...Moms are usually right. You already rolled your Cruiser. That likely says something about your driving skills, or your judgement.:flipoff2: Buy a lesser car for getting around in, say something like an old Volvo 240. Concentrate on safe and slow. Grow up a bit, and then you'll be ready to own a Cruiser again. Concentrate on your education now, and worry about Land Cruisers later when you have more time and money.

On balance, a 60 series is a poor choice for a highschool student. I would vote for slow, heavy, plus airbags. How about a nice Crown Vic?:D

What does she want you to buy?

How about an 80?

Edit: I rolled a Cruiser at high speed and pretty much walked away. A friend had a FJ60 loaded down with two friends and a bunch of camping gear. Rolled it on the interstate, and they all walked away. It doesn't happen everytime, but if I was to roll a stock vehicle....

Meeebeee my point was missed,

. . . It rolled
. . . You walked away

Doesn't matter if you were offroading or someone t-boned ya; the Bluebox was your shield; ya walked away didn't ya ?

We loose a ricer a day down here,,,,two of those little doo-dad-a-mobiles zoom into each other: someone dies, other get choppered to the hospital.
Somethime is a little cheby & little ford,,,,same difference....no protective box.
In the BlueBox, da little chits may wack your frame, but you'll walk away....

Oh, if ya rolled the 60 cause you're cornering too fast, then definately get the crown-vic, old Olds, whatever that's big, heavy & slow....

I have full insurance coverage on my cruiser, Iam in Texas..is it different there, or is it your age and price that keeps full coverage beyond your reach? :)

If I had to put my son/daughter in a car, a slow big cruiser would be my choice, not some of these hot rod new cars..

Edit...forgot your in houston! DU...

You could always tell her that to you, having to drive around in one of those fully electrified econobox genericars is an insult to[your] human dignity...but like the others said, if she's forking out some or all of the money, she's gonna have conditions.

I don't know what it is about parents. I was never able to get the car I wanted when I was 16. No matter what it was, it wasn't what they wanted me to drive. I guess if they were paying for it, I didn't have that much room for argument.

Good luck. Tell your parents that you'll get good grades if they got you a good cruiser.

i wish it was that easy. that worked in high school, but college is easier and i already have a 3.6 GPA

Do you live at home & commute to class?

What year are you?

Is there a family car she's trying to talk you into?

Does she think you should be studying instead of wrenching?

You may have to park cruiser madness for a couple of years.

My dad used to joke that my little brother's car kept him off the street (he was always wrenching it). He died in it at age 19.

See what I mean? Cars are the most dangerous things we use on a daily basis, but we take them for granted. I'm still a motorhead at 59, love my cruisers, & probably hit 100 in my DD at least once a week. But I had to survive adolescence & young adulthood to get here.
