Changing the oil in my daughter's 98 land cruiser and the oil pan drain plug was so tight that it stripped the threads out of the oil pan.
What are some options to fix this without getting a new oil pan?

There are some kits out there for this, probably one at your local auto parts store. I'd start with an insert kit and if that doesn't take, drill and tap it to the next biggest bolt size.

Try walking into your local auto parts store and ask for an "over sized" drain plug. The diameter is slightly larger with a slight taper to recut the threads. And don't over tighten (about 15 ft/lb max).

I had this issue with my wife Lexus RX300 when the oil change place stripped out the bolt by over-tightening. They re-tapped it for a larger bolt. Unfortunately, it leaked. When we spoke to Lexus about it, they said that it is not an approved fix - and that the only way to fix it was to replace the pan. After some letters, the oil change place ultimately replaced the pan. I don't know how similar the pan material is - but you may want to call the dealership and make sure it will work.

Did you cross-thread it or is it totally stripped? If the former, I have had luck getting a tap the original size and chasing the threads. That happened to me while out of town and getting an oil change at the local quick change shop. I did the "critical recovery procedure" myself and never had a problem again with the plug.

I don't know that there is much material on that insert in the pan that the plug threads into to get much larger and still be very strong and reliable. Other folks would know better.

If really stripped, the best fix of all......a new pan.

Re-tapped and larger bolt. No leaks so far so we will see.
