Two days ago, I tried to program a route on my guidance system. It sort of froze up, then it told me to check if the disc was dirty or damaged. I ejected it and put it back in. The navigation slowly started working again.

Now it won't work at all. Keep getting same errors no matter what:

"DVD check in progress. Unable to read data. Check if map DVD is correct."

I don't get it. The disc has absolutely no damage on it.

I do have the nav override installed, but I can't imagine that's the culprit, b/c it has been in since last September and is working fine.

Any thoughts on this, or has anyone else experienced this? its driving me nuts. I don't want to go to dealer b/c they will blame it on nav override I am sure.

You are right they will probably try to blame the override, but I guarantee that is not the issue as that is after the DVD check process.

Any way for you to get your hands on another disc? I doubt that is the issue, but it's where I'd start.

After that I think your only option is to go to the dealer and hope for the best.

Try to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. This should reset the ECUs in the vehicle and hope it's just a glitch. If it doesn't work, it looks to me that the NAV Receiver has a bad laser head which has trouble reading the DVD. This happens to lots of 01/02 Lexus but I am surprised to see if this is the case to these newer LC200.

Thanks. I tried the DVD from my wife's 2008 Sequoia, exact same one, still wont work.

will try the battery now.

Oh boy.

Now it says "A PROGRAM CANNOT BE READ. PLEASE CONSULT TO A DEALER."

Followed by about 100 Japanese characters.

I have lost the maintenance icons as well.

Must be in the head unit.

Update. Talked to Prestigious Society. Had the nav override removed as they recommended. Now I am sitting in the dealer waiting to see what they can do to fix my truck. Then I have to have override reinstalled. What a pain.

it is evident the mechanic has no idea what he is doing. i wish a had an LX 570 so I could have left in a loaner vehicle instead of sitting here listening to people haggling over Corolla prices.

I walked back there, and his last comment was "Its still talking to us in Japanese too, Bo."

The dealer knew nothing about the truck. After 3 hours, they sent me home and are ordering a new map DVD, which is not the issue.

Lots of fun.

Got to love "repairs by guessing". Did you mention that you already tried a different DVD or suggest they pull one out of a car on the lot to verify this is or is not the issue? At least your next visit should be quicker - either the new DVD works or it doesn't. Then I'm sure they'll send you home and order a new head unit. :) Let us know how it goes!

On a side note...

...you could always use some of the $10k you saved by buying an LC over the LX to rent a car for the day. ;) That, or if/when the DVD repair doesn't work, make a big enough fuss that when you bring the LC back to replace the head unit (or what ever their next course of action is), you want a loaner.

Under toyota warranty policy you should get a loaner when the repair will take overnight.

I would have insisted they just try another DVD from the lot and see of the same issue occurs. Obviously it will and then you can insist on the new drive.

I would have left the override in. Let them disable it and then find out that's not the cause. Not your issue to deal with. They cannot prevent you from modifying the vehicle, only if they can prove the part is causing the issue simply by removing it. If it is, then the can charge you for the "repair" -- but thats not the issue you're having.

Toyota techs are clueless when it comes to nav issues. Search back on several of my threads and you will see what I'm talking about!

Good luck!

The mechanic was so rude, that he tried to tell me I could have fried the unit on my wife's Sequoia by swapping the disc, becuase "Toyota encrypts them." The discs are identical and the Nav software identical. Literally, the exact same version, b/c the trucks are both 2008. I explained this, and he backed off.

Update, the disc came in after an entire week. My truck sat at the dealer from 9am to 4pm. I came and picked it up b/c they told me it was "ready." I was excited, until the service rep said, "Did they tell you what we are going to do?" I said, "No."

They said, we are going to order you a whole new Nav unit! He was really excited about it. He said, "we spent all day on the phone with Toyota's techs, and nobody could figure it out."

I am not so excited. Its supposed to be here next week. Then I can take another trip to the dealer.

For now, I am back to the Japanese characters and the phrase "consult to a dealer."

So are they replacing it with an English unit???

Yes. I guess you are joking. The one I had was English, until it got mad one day and turned Japanese.

Unit came in today. I of course had to call to find out.

Service - we cannot tell you if its in, you will have to talk to parts.

Parts - its in, we cannot tell you when you can put it in, you will have to talk to service.

Service - would you like to set an appointment?

Me: No, last time I set one I had to wait 2 hours anyway, I just want to know how long its going to take.

Service - your tech is not in, would you like to talk to another tech.

Me: I dont care, I just want to get it installed.

Service - puts me on hold. Seven minute later, "is this an aftermarket unit?"

Me: Oh boy. No.

Service: It usually takes about 3 or 4 hours. What kind of car is this?

Me: A Land Cruiser. Apparently you have one guy who knows how to put them in. I just want to know if he is there tomorrow, and I will bring it in the morning.

Service: Yeah, ok, thats good.

Me [silently - I am slowly going crazy.]

At this point it sounds like it's time to (calmly and in a reasonable manor) talk to management. You certainly should be given a loaner and assured that you will not be called until the unit is properly fixed. If this unit is bad or does not resolve the issue, they need to keep the truck until it's fixed.

Did you buy the car from the dealer? If so, I'd make a stink with your salesperson as well. Probably won't help much but most of the time, they want to keep you happy so they may be able to pull some strings.

I calmly wrote them a letter outlining my displeasure with them. The truck is there now supposedly getting fixed.

The problem is I dont want to leave the LC and be given a Prius for the next week.

I did not buy the car from the dealer. I was able to pick it up brand new from a dealer in another state in April 2009 for $59,000.00 delivered to my house (it is a 2008 but was still on the lot). This dealer had a 2009 which was identical and would not go under $70,000.00.

Got a new unit installed today.

Also got inside information. Toyota apparently literally came out of pocket $3500.

Dealer told me that they do get paid well for warranty work, just a "slightly reduced rate." They also said that Toyota gives them a 35% markup on all parts, even for warranty work, to cover labor, phone calls, etc.

Anyway, I have a nav unit again. But, the service was horrible.

Then again, an LX looks like an old man ride w/ weird rims. So I am happy to have the LC back.

Glad you stuck with the '08. No need to spend the premium on the '09, and even the '10. Nothing worth the difference.

Come on...got more new car smell in the newer ones!

Now the A/C does not come on until the ignition has been on for at least 15 seconds, and then its always at 75 degrees with the fan on low.

I can't decide if I feel like taking it back b/c of that or not. I guess so.
