Newby here and I really like the 60's series wagons but am a little lost with the model designations. So I know the "FJ" stands for the gas engine as supposed to the "HJ" which is diesel. So North America got the "FJ" models where does the 60, 61 and 62 come in and what is the difference between them? What years were they made?? What size engine is in the FJ's?? Thanks

FJ60 - 81(?)-87, 2F carbed inline six gas(4.2L) with a 4 speed manual
FJ62 - 88-90, 3FE EFI inline six gas(4.0L) with an auto
HJ60 - not sure years, 81-86?, straight six diesel(4.0L), non-turbo, manual or auto, available in Canada, but not US
HJ61 - a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) straight six diesel, some (all?) are turbos
BJ60 - four cylinder diesel (3.4L), non-turbo, available in Canada, but not US

Mud has it's very own Wiki.

Have a look thru there. As with most cruiser stuff there is a lot of overlapping in years and markets around the world. So it isn't all straight forward at first.

So to get a 60's series FJ with a 5spd manual tranny what model would I be looking for??

The 5 speed was never offered in the US. According to the LandCruiser FAQ the H55F 5 speed was offered as early as 1983. In the US, sometime in 1985 (or there about) Toyota added a spacer to the 4 speed transmission to make it as long as the 5 speed. (my truck has a 5/85 build date and it has the spacer). In these "later" trucks, the 5 speed is almost a bolt in mod. In the earlier trucks you can still do it but you will have to change drive shaft lengths, and maybe do a few other mods.

Here's a link to the LandCruiser FAQ transmission page: TLC FAQ - 8.1 Transmission & transfer Case Ratios (All :1)

Adding to this:

HJ60 engine: 2H 4liter indirect-injection...

HJ61 ALL TURBO ! engine: 12HT 4liter direct injetion

The HJ61 was available in europe with LHD as well.

And one more thing... all 60's: round headlights,
61/62: double sqare headlights.

Canada's HJ60 was available from 86-87 or so IIRC, and the BJ60 was available from 81-85 or so.
I have seen some early model HJ61s with the twin round headlights instead of the quad squares, but those might have been aftermarket mods, but one never knows with all the overlapping in the Land Cruisers. You know, 60 series in South America until the early 90s, maybe? ;)

EDIT: Wasn't there somebody on here who had a stock 88 FJ62 that had the 3F-E with a Manual trans and hand crank windows and manual mirrors?

I am looking for a late model 60's series landcruiser 88 or 89 with a left hand drive in manual 5 speed with a turbo diesel engine. Does this truck exist or is this something that has to be built?? What is the easiest way to go about building this vehicle if thats what is needed?? Thanks

If you are in Europe (or South America?) I believe it exists, if in the US, you'll need to build (25 year rule for importing models not sold in US, nice example of one built), if in Canada, you can get a JDM Right Hand Drive. What you are looking for is an HJ61.

Easiest way is to have a lot of money. :D

I am located in Canada, however I am dead against the right hand drive vehicles (im useless with my left hand)!!! What about taking an 88 or 89 FJ-62 in good shape and putting a turbo diesel and manual tranny into it, is this possible? Where can I find these parts? Thanks

FJ62 (or 60) + a decommissioned mine truck + an aftermarket or homebrew turbo set-up would give you what you want.
or
transplant the drivetrain out of a (wrecked) 5-speed JDM 61 into a LHD 60 or 62

Where are you in Canada? I might be able to steer you towards a mine truck.....

FWIW, anyone I've talked to says that RHD isn't a big deal. You get used to it after a week or two.

Many mines use toyota diesel trucks for personnel transport. They are able to purchase and use models not available for retail, on-road sale. When the mines upgrade, they have old trucks to dispose of. Condition varies with where the truck was used.
If you are in Ontario, the ones I know of won't be of use, but I would suspect you can track some down in mining districts out east. Sometime through the nineties, from what I understand, the standard 70 series mine trucks made the change from the 3B to the 1HZ(+5 speed). A 1HZ plus 5 speed would be a decent setup in a 60 series, made better by adding a turbo.

here's a mine truck build-up thread by one of the Ft. St. John mudders: https://forum.ih8mud.com/ca-bc-peace-canyon-toyota-swamp-donkeys/186260-work-truck-build-up.html

I built what you want, though haven't turbo'd it yet. It is 95% done. $15K (American) and it is yours. :grinpimp:

I took a rusty RHD Aussie spec HJ60, upgraded from the H41 (4-speed) installed a new H55F with a later-year transfercase and then yanked the drivetrain into a clean FJ62 with a bad A440 (auto) tranny. It is now one of the world's extremely rare HJ62s.

I started the FJ60 spinoff page in the MUD Wiki. Everyone go and look and please correct / add info.
