problem is still there

I think most of us on here are 100 IFS. Since your front end is like an 80 maybe you might have luck asking on that board?

Check caster with a wheel alignment. There is a small amount of adjustment with something I am told by the shop that did mine. I have a 2" lift but caster was 4 degrees out, possibly due to an old accident so worth a go

X2, you did not say if the steering wheel has play, or if the truck simply wanders. You can try to check for play in the steering shaft (rag joint, universal joints) above the box, and then play within the box itself, and then play below the box. You will need a friend to move the wheel while you look at the parts. Did you replace the sector shaft with another new 105 series sector shaft?

Most likely is a bad caster setting. Its called caster because its the vertical offset of the steering that causes the front wheel to tend to return to the straight ahead position. Too little caster will produce vague center feel. Get the angle checked by your alignment guy [or borrow a caster angle gauge if you are feeling sporty].

thanks for all the reponses

so the play is the input shaft to the pitarm on the steering box

The uni in the steering colum seem to be stiff if held in place and steering wheel is turned.

so i replaced my steering box with a recondition unit @ $700 AUD and i thought i would solve the problem but still there

So the test was wheels up in the air someone moving the steering left and right about 2 and a bit inches of play and pitman does not move although the input shaft is moving around quite hapilly.

I'm not that knowledgeable in the 105's, however I have seen a few US members comment on the control arm bushings for the axles become worn and can cause the axle to slightly shift side to side. I would inspect the axle mount bushings on the frame/axle. I would also look at the panhard. Any type of play on axles is going to create a wandering feel. My bushings are toast on the rear axle of my truck, I can feel the back end tracking funny around long bends and tight mountain passes, I am always correcting for it despite a 2 week old OEM steering rack, new tie rods, and alignment

Yeah, that is too bad. Sounds like your reconditioned steering box was just cleaned and resealed. I sent my worn out box in to a shop in West Texas to get rebuilt, and I gave them a brand new sector shaft and other parts to put in, and it came back tight.

Sounds like you might be down under, and shipping that box back and forth would be expensive, but let me know if you want the name and address anyway. HTH
