Driving home from work one evening, cruiser died at a stop light. i have been all over it, and cant figure it out! It just will not get spark. Replaced: Voltage reg., Coil, Points, Condenser, Ignition seems to be good, Distributor fairly new, Cant find bad ground, Anyone have any ideas? Im open to trying whatever might work. 2F '74 by the way. I know Im getting fuel, and it turns over no problem, lights still come on bright, points gap good etc. any help would be greatly appreciated!!

When mine did that, it was the coil because I had been running full 12V to it rather than through a ballast resistor.

I know you said you replaced the coil... Do you know that you have voltage at the coil when you're trying to start it? That's where I'd start.

What's going on at the plugs? Are they getting spark? Take a spare plug, remove the #1 wire, insert the plug into the #1 lead, place the plug on top of a good ground, like the engine. Have someone crank it, and watch for spark. If the plug sparks, you know it's not the ignition system.

How did it die? Did it just shut off or sputter to a slow death?

it just shut off, yeah, tried the ol' sparkplug trick first thing to see if it was fuel or spark. I can get the test light to come on the positive side of the coil, so Im thinkin thats alright. I have plugged and unplugged connections, made some new better ones in a coupla places, but wiring harness looks pretty good. Anyone know what the black wire going to the distributor is? Seems like this problem is one of those small no brainers that just jumps out at ya at the end, but man, Im stumped.

No sparky?

so you got voltage to the + side of the coil.
If you disconnect the - from the coil and hook up a temp wire
and momentarily short it, do you get a spark?.
No spark = bad coil,
Spark = problem with wire to dizzy or
internal issue in dizzy
A short to ground in that wire will take out your coil in short order. (The - wire to the dizzy from the coil) also you need to examine under the cap a short there not necessarily a wire could cause failure of coil.
Good luck

Did you check the coil to dist. cap wire? Use an ohmmeter and check, if you have infinite resistance you have a broken wire. I think the black wire goes to the coil if I remember correctly. I would double check a schematic first though. That maybe your problem right there.

yes, I think the black wire goes from the distributor to the coil, or vise versa. I'll have to check the coil wire to the dizzy with an actual ohm meter instead of a test light, and see what if anything im gettin. I'll try shorting the coil also to see if I get a spark. Good ideas, I'll give em a try when i get home!

he has points

I've never seen a unit with points that didnt break the - side of the coil with the points.
This could be different. you never know with the Japs.
Good call D.
I stilll think its a good idea to check your - wire on the coil for short of opens..
Good luck.
