I just bought an '87 pickup. It was a turbo 22ret but that blew up and the kid who had it put in a chevy 305 with big heads, a cam, intake, and some other stuff. the truck runs real good but I have a few problems.

#1 alternator. When i got the truck it had a bad alternator so i took it out and bought a brand new one. I put it in and put all the wires back in the spot the kid had them and it still didnt work. My friends and I determined that it was wired wrong being that it had only 1 wire going from the battery to the stud on the back of the alternator, and nothing going to the ignition or anything. Soo i found a diagram for a chevy truck and wired it according to that. Still doesnt work. I also put a brand new battery in it. Can anyone give me some info on how that should be wired, Pics would be great.

#2 over heating. The truck has a radiator out of a camaro with 1 electric fan, and a 160 thermostat. and it still runs hot, really hot. what should i change to have this thing running at a normal temp. my guess is a bigger radiator, or put it in the bed.

i dont know about the alternator.
but the radiator could be clogged.
use a infrared thermometer to measure temps in multiple spots on the radiator.
there may be cold spots.
if thats the case a complete acid flush is nessicary, and you may want to replace the radiator after.

or, the pump could be shot, or the radiator's capacity could be too small.

OK, thanks. I have a feeling the radiator is too small as soon as i looked at it. I think im going to take one from my pile of chevy truck parts and either cut the rad support or put it in the bed.

if you put it in the bed, you might cause more problems. the water pump may not pump enough volume of water to circulate. and you would also have to run an electric fan, more amp draw for your existing alternator problem.
and unless you mount it on the roll bar, it wont get very good air flow.

they do make electric waterpumps, but again, more amp draw.

The alternator problem is solved already, its at an alternator shop getting wired in.
I already am running electric fans, and my friend and I came up with a design using a rollbar we have laying around that will hold the radiator.
And the problem with the alternator wasnt amp draw, the kid who had it before me did a half-ass job of wiring it, and the alternator was shot, so i put a new one in and wired it to Delco's specs and it still didnt work.

Radiator can fit up front. Get a large one from a Camaro or better yet an Advanced Adapters unit and bolt it right in. Throw a couple of Taurus fans at it and you should be fine. I've never liked radiators in the bed.

The alternator should not need to be worked on by a shop - there's a simple adapter that Downey sells to use w/ the stock Toyota wiring.

And If The alternator Is New Enough It Can Be Ran Right To The Battery. It Has Its Own Resistor To Decide If The Battery Still Needs To Be Charged, And When It Needs to Be charged

Why is the first letter of every word capitalized, did you press shift every time?

where can I get the adapter? I am having the same problems adapting a delco alternator to my fj60 wiring harness.

Before you get crazy with the remote mount radiator...The radiator must be shrouded in order for cool air to be directed into the engine comaprtment. This is one of the simplest, yet overlooked part of the cooling sytem. Do you have a shroud? Are you running a pusher or puller fan?

i did a v8 swap on my toyota and i bought a universal radiator from summit racing and made mounts to fit it up front i had a built 400 sm block in mine and it kept it cool i did have to mod the rad support a bit to get the electric in front of the radiator but it worked great i can probibally find the part number and brand of the radiator if you wish
