Hi all,
My name is Keith and I live in Reno, NV.
I was referred here from the pirate board and they said that this is a great board for info.
I just picked up an 88 FJ62 YESTERDAY!!! :bounce2:
Its got a bad alternator, and I was digging around in it today, and Ill be damed if I cant find an easy way to get that thing out. I have a chiltons manuel, but it is NO help what so ever.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
Im actually pretty embarassed to even ask, cuz it should be dirt simple right?

thanks.

sweet glad to see you made it over here!!! Welcome!

I would answer but I have no clue, havent had to mess with mine yet. (PO had it rebuilt)

Starter is my next project.

welcome aboard...chicago in reno!? i don't get it.
might try the search function if you takers on your question.
plenty of knowledge on this board, so most questions will be answered.
post up pics of your new rig....ya noob.:flipoff2:

Use the Chiltons manual as toilet paper, or if you are short, as a step stool to see over the hood of your 62. Best bet is to get a Factory Service Manual if you are planning to do your own work. Use the search function to find threads concerning the FSM and where to get one.

As for the alternator, the 62 must be way different than my 60, because mine couldnt be easier to remove. Im sure a 62 guy will chime in for help.

Welcome to Mud, enjoy your truck.

ditto...mine took no time. one bolt basically. i'm one step short of being a chimp and figured it out....

thanks for the welcome. I have a feeling Ill be spending quite a bit of time on here after reading some of the threads in the faq.
As for the Chicago/ Reno...originally from Chicago, but now reside in Reno for the past 8 years.
The alternator in mine is UNDERNEATH some other pulley mechannism, and I cant see a damn thing, and aside from pulling that "thing" off, im not so sure theres an easy way to get to it tpo replace it.

Use number 3 for that manual:
Cover your head for the beating you are about to recieve for having that and not a complete set of factory service manuals ; )
But seriously they are helpfull, do a search there are probably already a couple of people that have talked about this problem and some solutions : )

Welcome to the group. I have a similar issue...need to adjust the alt belt and it seems to be a PITA to get to the bolt that holds the adjustment. It seems the air pump needs to come off in order to get to the alternator. Good luck.

Welcome to Mud, all the knowledge, half of the banter... Love to see some pics of the Cruiser, and use the search function liberally.

Goodmoning gents,
Ill get some pictures up as soon as I have some spare time... She looks pretty good for the most part. Some rust , mostly on the passengers side rear door and quarter panel. She has 33's with a 3 in lift, and the interior is IMMACULATE.probably this weekend for pics. Sounds as if im going to have to track those manuals down.

Thanks,

Chicago

for those of us who are really cheap of lazy I cant figure out which I am more. Probably both. :) You can view the manual in pdf for on birfield.com

The easiest way to access the alternator is to remove the air pump for the emissions system. Once you remove the smog pump, easy access - you'll also need to loosen the power steering pump which acts as a belt tensioner. Also, use the search function - there's a lot of information on 62 alternators and replacment options - high output (Mean Green), Toyota remanufactured, locally rebuilt and NAPA/Auto Zone replacments.

Welcome to Mud - now post some pics!!

Harry

Hey there Harry,
I grew up in Hoffman Estates IL right down the street from you. I went to the University of Palatine for a bit till I came out here to finish school.
Thanks for that info. I tried to drop the power steering pump to get the belt out of the way, but it wouldnt budge. The actual "belt tensioner" seems to be non functional too. I tightlened, loosend, tightened etc, and the belt tension stayed the same. I doused the bolts I think looked a bit stubborn and came in the house to let it sit for the night.
For such a STUPID fix, it sure is a pain in the ass.

Thanks for the info.
Ill get pics when I get her runnin, hopefully this weekend.

Yep - none other than William Rainey Harper Jr. College - now the more distinguished Harper College, which by next year might just be a 4 year instituition of higher learing. FWIW

Heah,
Its kidna like a half way house for the undecided high school grads.
I went to Conant high school. I made the rounds in the universities there. Went to ISU (academic probation) back to harper, then to Loyola, then realized that the Chicago area is not condusive to studying...PARTY, PARTY, PARTY... So I had to move out of town. Went snowboarding at Lake Tahoe and I decided to move here. Graduated from University of Nevada with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing 4 years ago.:bounce2:
Chicago is still my HOME though, always will be.

SHE'S UP AND RUNNIN BOYS!!!!!!:bounce2:  :flipoff2:
Harry gave me the key steps, but things were a bit more complicated. Most all of the bolts were froze. Dropped the steering pump to get the belt off. Got a BIG ASS breaker bar to loosen the smog pump and pull it out, and the rest was a snap!
Took her out for a spin and all was good.
Im not quite sure of the procedure for getting into 4 wd low. I tried and ground the gears.
Next step is to get her street legal (registration, insurance etc.) go through the fluids and see what happens!

Hey CSX,
You went to conant? NICE! I wonder if we know any of the same instructors!? There were a few that were way old when I was there.
Did you know old mr weisner the shop teacher? He was a cool old guy with a crooked eye...hey...that rhymes:D !
What exactly IS a key punch operator?
