Hello from the northwoods! I'll be moving to Memphis, TN in about a month or so, and see that a couple of guys in this section are from Memphis as well. My company is relocating me, so I'll be in Memphis until sometime in summer 2011 when they feel like moving me to yet another place. So, I figure it'd be a great time to connect with other Land Cruiser owners in the area. I've got a 1974 FJ40 that I restored, and a 1970 FJ55 on my to-do list that is in pieces. Both are back in my family's pole barn in Michigan. The FJ40 is wintering there, but got a good deal of miles on it around Wisconsin this past summer.

I'm not sure when I'm moving yet (November?), but if anyone can recommend a good apartment complex or place to live in the Memphis area, I'm all ears. And good BBQ joints - always looking for good BBQ!! I look forward to meeting you, hanging out, and if you have room, let me ride along on trail rides. I can pay my hitchhiking fee by cash, check, cigars, beer, whiskey, food, etc. (I usually have most of those with me when out on adventures!)

Happy trails

Brian

Welcome Brian! :cool::beer:

Only things I know about Memphis are that Elvis' house has some fine fine carpet and you ought to have plenty of BBQ to choose from. Plenty of [STRIKE]Memphians[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]Memphisians[/STRIKE] people from Memphis here though, so I'm sure they'll chime in. :grinpimp:

Good luck with the move!

I grew up in Memphis but have been in Arkansas full time since '98. My folks still live there. What area will you be working? Find apartments in areas like Germantown/Collierville/Cordova. These are pretty "safe" comparatively speaking. Memphis of late has made some "Top 25" lists lately, and these aren't the good kind. PLENTY of good BBQ joints in Memphis, so you are in luck. Kind of the BBQ capital of the world, if you ask me. You HAVE to go to the Rendezvous downtown, then you have Interstate BBQ out on 3rd off I-55 (bad area, good bbq.) Germantown Commissary is good as well. Of course there is the Original Corky's, which is great. No shortage of places, just some of my faves.

What part of town is work going to be in?

you are more than welcome to pm me the details and I can point you in the right direction.

I still own a house there but not currently living there but will be back in about 6 to 8 months.

Lots of good cruiser folks in town.

Brian,
Welcome to the opportunity to live in the "north delta". I'm located in Jonesboro, AR, about an hour to the Memphis bridge. As Bomar states, get some guidance on picking a domicile. Of course, where you're working in Memphis is key. There's also this Ark. kid going to grad school down there that is a little lost, so maybe we can rescue both of you.
Give a shout when you are traveling through, you'll pass me on the way to Memphrica. Main thing is to go ahead, spring for the trailer or whatever and bring the 40. We'll find you a place to store it down here, no use wasting a good chance to wheel some Ark. rocks . . .
PM me when you know what your schedule is.

It'll be just me for now, and I'll be there for 6-8 months or so. I'll be working on Ragan street at the Sonoco Products metal end stamping plant, in the s*** hole part of town. The current production manager of the plant I'm at in Wisconsin just came from the plant I'm going to. You know it's bad when I ask him about the plant and he tells me to get a handgun if I don't already have one, and to get my concealed permit right away!! Yikes!! I don't mind a commute, but nothing more than 20 minutes or so. Price range, well, $500-$700 would be reasonable, I suppose.

I'll let you know when I'll be in town, so I can meet up with you. I really like it in Wisconsin, as I grew up in the north woods, but have not heard anything about when I'm moving. I'm keeping my head down and not saying anything so they might forget about me for a while, and I can stay in Wisconsin for a wee bit longer to bird hunt, bow hunt, and hang around!

I'll be keeping the FJ40 in Michigan for now as I won't have immediate access to a place to work on it, store it with my kayaks, etc. Plus, I'll be moving again (likely May/June/August) and carting it around may get cumbersome. I dunno - we'll see how it goes, and what opportunities present themselves.

Any bird hunters here? Feel free to take me along :D

Good advice!

I like Randevous and Black Hat. You can always go bird hunting at the Peabody. Look in the fountain or take the elevator to the roof. This is where your concealed carry license will come in handy. Lot's of great concerts on Mud Island. Memphis in May has gotten out of control (TOO many people), but Beale street is always fun at night. Welcome and be careful. Don't stop if someone rear ends you. ;)

Also guys, how do we get in on this Under The Bridge Tour in Memphis with the members from Cottonland?? Maybe it's "invite only" :) Sure looks like a good time from the pics!

I'll be in Memphis this Wednesday through Friday looking at apartments, meeting my new plant management, etc. If anyone wants to meet up, shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to work something out. If anyone wants to be a 'tour guide' I'd be much obliged :D

I hope to meet some of you over the next few months.

Brian

Brian,

Look up Jordan7118 on the mud board. He is an Arkie who has moved to Memphis for grad school. He is rather new to the area but I am sure he could help show you around.

Thanks, Lance! I know maybe tree (sic) people here, so looking forward to finding a few more to add to the safety network

Brian, I returned your PM
