Does anyone know if there's a place locally that sells just the helicoil thread insert itself, without the kit?

While doing the knuckle rebuild, I found that both caliper mounting holes on the driver's side had previously been stripped and repaired with a helicoil. That was after I accidentally pulled out both thread inserts that I could have probably reused.

Now I just need the 12x1.25 thread inserts to put back into the already tapped holes.

Try Fastenal

Let's not forget McMaster-Carr or MSC-Direct.

My preference is for time-serts, but you need to buy a kit for each specific size. Kit has prep and installer tools. I have one size at home, it's either M10x1.25 or M12x1.25. I'll check. Either way, it requires drilling and tapping - and you may already have drilled too much for it.

Try AutoZone or Advanced Auto also. One of them had a whole bunch when I visited over the weekend.

Felix, re my Time Serts, you may be in luck. My kit is for M12x1.25. The threaded inserts I have are about 7/16" long. They require a 31/64 hole to be drilled.

Check out Time Serts and see if they are a way you want to go. I can install them for you. They are far stronger than helicoils.

Is the knuckle off the truck (hint drill press more betterer for accurate hand drilling/tapping)?

Thanks, everyone.

Dan, no, the knuckle is back on the truck. I put everything back together except for mounting this caliper. I expected (and still do) to be able to just thread in new inserts without having to re-drill or tap. I'll take a look at the time serts, but if I can just slide in new inserts, I'd prefer to do that.

And I'm just assuming these are helicoil. Partly because they look similar to the helicoils I've seen before and because I understand the time serts to be a newer product. These looked like they've been there for quite some time.

Felix,
If you can't find the metric coils, I have the kit and some .5-20 x.75 coils if you think they will work and want to convert to standard hardware.

Fairfax auto parts (all over the area) has them too. I had bought some in Vienna.
