I have searched and searched on this both on forum and off and keep coming up with different methods that seem to contradict each other. I don't want to fry everything, so I would like to do it right the first time. Who has an HEI distributer and wired a kill switch into it? I am not looking for other anti-theft ideas, just the wiring info on this setup. I know performance distributer (the company the PO of my rig bought the HEI setup from) makes a kill switch setup, but its $15 for some wires and a switch, and then $14 for shipping. Seems like a mild rip off at $29. I know someone else has made a similar one themselves.

Thanks,
-Irish

A GM HEI runs off of 12V.

An additional switch installed anywhere in the wire from the ignition switch to the distributor will do the trick.

Haven't got around to this one yet due to some other projects, but I am thinking to tackling this tomorrow. Still getting mixed messages on the right wire to interrupt. DUI sells a kill switch kit http://performancedistributors.com/product/kill-switch/ and they had this on the instructions on the site:

"Just mount the toggle switch in an inconspicuous area, connect one side of the switch to the negative side of the coil and the other side to a ground."

Just before I chop into my 40 I wanted to make sure that was correct. I think All I need is some 10g wire (might be 12g I will look tonight) and a 15amp rated switch (this seems to be the amp that everyone is recommending online). Thoughts?

If it were me - interrupt the 12V+ to the coil. Use a relay wired to a switch, and the relay output provides 12V to the coil. Run the ignition switched 12V to the switch, then from switch to the relay to kick the relay on/off. This way you can only turn ignition on with combination of the switch and the ignition. Make sure you wire it to the 12v+ switched that is on at both run and start.

There is only one wire you can interrupt unless you run a relay of some kind. You can always interrupt the wire to the starter solenoid if you don't want it to be able to crank at all

This may just be my opinion..... but.... the coil 12V switched should already be on a dedicated circuit/relay. You really don't want something that important (especially when they can be sensitive to voltage drops) sharing switched 12V circuit with everything else wired through the ignition.

If it's already wired this way, then all you need to do is find the switched 12V wire running to the relay (to kick it on) and throw a switch on that wire.

Basically if someone were to try and steal the vehicle, there would be cranking but no spark - and as such, no running.

That is what I am after. I know realistically I cannot prevent it from being stolen, but I can make it more of a pain to anyone who might try.

I'll look for a relay tonight when I get home. Thanks everyone!
