I have been outside working with this issue for a few hours and it's time for bed. Before I go I wanted to run my issue by you guys, and see if I can get any insight. I have performed a search and did not find anything of value.

2000 LC 148k, fresh coolant at 148k (6 months ago) also swapped in a brand new thermostat this evening. Radiator shows no sign of buildup or corrosion. Vehicle warms up properly (according to dash gauge, and it did so with the old thermostat, I replaced it as a troubleshooting measure).

The rear floor heater is very hot and stays hot.

The front heater (a/c compressor off) takes a few minutes to warm up (as it would normally) but does not get as hot as the rear, and fluctuates somewhat while driving.

With the a/c compressor on, front heating is completely useless. The a/c completely overpowers it and it is barely lukewarm.

I have attempted to squeeze the upper radiator hose, and I parked the front of the vehicle pretty high (I have a angled driveway + ramps) in the air, and I had to add very little coolant, so I believe the coolant level is correct, and I do not think there is air in the heater core.

I downloaded the FSM from here earlier (thank you to the member who posted it)
I searched for a "heater valve" on here and I looked through the FSM but I really didn't find anything that I would classify as such (search revealed this could be an issue, but it was on 80 series cruisers).

Looking through the FSM, it appears the mixing flap is on the right (passenger) side. I peeked under both the driver's side and passenger's side and both flaps do work, but I will take a closer look at the passenger side, hopefully tomorrow, to make sure it is not a flap/mixing issue.

I think that should be enough information to give a good indication of where I am with troubleshooting.

I am thinking
1) mix flap issue, maybe there is something that I am missing related to the heater box and flaps.
2) possible a water pump (damaged fins or another internal failure of some kind)

The radiator is spotless, the previous owner had the 90k service done at 82k, and I believe the vehicle was taken care of aside from the last few years (he lent it to some moron who trashed it).


If you guys have any thoughts, please let me know. I would like to get this taken care of while the interior is still all out of the vehicle.

The coolant appears to be completely full, and I have bled the system from the top of the throttle body (the bleeder screw there).

Any other thoughts on what this could be? I am assuming coolant is circulated through the heater core full time, and the air is only routed there when needed? If not, where is the heater valve?

Also I pulled the evaporator panel (attempting to troubleshoot) and it appears that there is a lot of funk and dirt down on the bottom of the evaporator and floor of the evaporator box. Has anyone had any luck attempting to clean this?
 
Thought I'd post an update.


I decided to pull the "T" connection for the heater output at the firewall (behind the intake manifold). There was some water coming out of the output after I started it with the hose unplugged, so I clamped off the bottom connection (coming from the rear heater assembly) to make sure this was not return coolant from that. (My goal was to see the volume coming out of the main heater core to see if there was a stoppage.

Very little fluid was coming out, and it was not hot (I had been filling the radiator as it drained down) so I plugged the return hose with my finger until I felt some pressure, and started letting fluid out a little at a time. This produced some air bubbles, and after a minute or so, the hose became warm with return coolant.

I idled the engine enough that the return stream was completely filling the return hose as it came out and then quickly re-attached the "T" fitting.

Presto, 130+ degree heat vs about 80 degrees before.

I guess it was just a lot of air bubbles...
