My '98 100 has developed a rather quirky electrical issue, and I will do my best to describe it. About 3 months ago the hazard lights when engaged would work for one click, and then nothing. I tightened a ground wire under the hood (to the left of the battery) and that seemed to fix the problem.

This morning, it started again, so I tightened the ground once again, but a new problem developed. When I break, the dash lights go dim. When I engage the blinkers, the A/C lights blink as well. The left turn signal stopped working altogether.

I removed the ground wire and cleaned it up as well as the washer, and there was little to no corrosion. I checked the fuse and it was good to go.

The hazards still do not work. I put my iphone behind my truck to video, and I tested repeatedly pulling the left blinker lever down, in rapid succession, as it would blink as long as the lever was not completely engaged. When I checked the video, low and behold, the blinker light was blinking! I went back into the cab, engage the left blinker fully and it now works!

Of course the A/C dash blink when the blinkers are engaged and the hazards do no work at all, other than 1 flash when engaged.

This is all probably clear as mud, but if anyone can help, I would great appreciate it.

What would interference look like? I am not sure I would know what to look for.

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable can chime in since electrical stuff is not my strong point at all. I have a hard time reading the EWD and interference is probably the wrong word, but I would be looking for any other ground points or junctions where something could go wrong.

Bad to worse. Now my daytime headlamps do not start up when the car is running, and when I turn on the headlights, the right turn arrow comes on.

All I have done is remove the one ground by the battery and cleaned it. Any thought from anyone? I am stumped here, as this came out of the blue, and is only getting worse.

Sorry to hear it.

The only gremlin I had that was similar just fixed itself after a couple of days. For no apparent reason the hazards would come on and stay on all by themselves, regardless of switch position or whether the truck was on, off, parked or driving.

Have you completely disconnected the battery and left it for a few minutes? Might try that a few times. That and just checking every fuse you can, in all the different fuse boxes, and just checking for general security of the relays inside and wiring to the fuse boxes, looking for any signs of water damage as well. Might give a tug to the various harnesses under the dash and up the steering column and every where else to see if something came loose.

For what it's worth: My 40 will give similar troubles with the blinkers and hazards both (by clicking once then just stopping working). These later model 40 front housings have a lot of grounding issues inside that I have had to constantly maintain once or twice a year. The rears aren't much better. In those cases it always comes down to a ground at the light/housings themselves.

Other than that I'm really not familiar with the 100's grounding at the lights but if you can get em out and make sure they're all well grounded internally, and back to the truck, it might help. Rigging a jumper lead to bypass and ensure a good ground while testing (when its acting up) might help isolate which lights are the culprit. If they are at all...

I recently went nuts trying to track down an issue with my lights/electrical on my 80. Some lights would work some times, brake lights not when headlights, tail lights all the time etc. etc. I tried everything I knew (which admittedly was not much) and could not figure it out. After talking to the guys at my local LC shop (Land Cruiser Specialists here in Austin) they recommended a shop they knew. $100 and the following day I had my truck back. Seems one of the plugs/sockets had an internal intermittent fault. Point is it would have taken me forever to figure it out. When it comes to electrical gremlins I am a firm believer in taking it to the pros. Just find an honest one. My guy actually had two 40's in he shop too.

Check all dual filament bulbs. They can fail and short to one another. Say if the parking light and brake light filaments are touching when the parking lights are turned on it could back feed voltage to the turn signal indicator. I'd like to help more but I don't have access to an ewd.
