Family trip to the Maze of Canyonlands and surrounding area. Lots miles on dirt and some slickrock. Lots of beautiful scenery. Lot's of fun.

The trip happened almost a month ago, and I finally have something to share.

Very nicely done. That looks like a great trip, and a destination for next year. Anything in particular to see or avoid?

Panorama Point makes for an awesome first night in the area. Not for those who fear heights (agorophobia?).

The Doll House has great short hikes and places to explore on foot. A day hike down to the Colorado river and back is a nice change.

The drive into the Doll House is a long day, period. It's also the funnest.

We drove over Sunset pass and down North Hatch Canyon where we forded the Dirty Devil, camped, and connected up with the highway via Poison Spring canyon. The area over Sunset pass is much different than the Maze. Big, wide, and open. It makes for a nice change of scenery.

Camping around the Dirty Devil is not so great. We camped right on the river (very nice) in what looked like a very inviting sandy spot nestled between a small cliff and scattered tamarisk. Not sand. Turned out to be dusty silt that got into everything. Should have known, as we were camped in a small floodplane.

I'll get a map up of our route. We basically did a big circle that started and ended in Hanksville.

I've been into the Maze twice, for a total of about 10 days. I love the Maze. It is the least visited park in the lower 48. The Doll House and Spanish Bottom are great. Panarama Point, Qeen Anne's bottom and the Maze Overlook are great. If you'll notice on the maps, there are two areas of the Maze, which are joined only by one road, the Flint Trail.

Outside of the Maze is Horseshoe Canyon which has the pargest and most pictographs (paintings, rather the chislings in the rock) in North Amercia.

If you go to the Maze, it takes a while to get to the trail heads, and also to get around the Maze itself. One week is perfect.
