I have a gallon of X-O Rust enamel oil base from True Value. It was a neutral base tinted to match my blue 40. I stripped down a window frame to bare metal due to minor rust issues. Now I cant get the paint to lay right. I get lite and dark colors and when I paint the edges the color runs off. I mixed it 50 50 with MS. It is not laying down like Rust Oleum does. What am I'm doing wrong? I might have to strip it off and try to find Rust Oleum in my color. Not easy to do in So. Cal. Maybe this can help other $50 painter. Any advice will do.

I've not done the ACE $50 paint job, but in reading about it, I'll say you've thinned waaay too much. Try about 15% mineral spirits as a starting point, and then thin more from there, if needed.

Here's a linky to a summary thread of the famous Mopar guy that started the $50 paint job ideas:
Introduction

Thanks for the info Wile E But I have read just about everything for the $50 paint job. I added more paint to my mix and it seems to be working a lil better. I don't want it to thick or It wont lay smooth. I guess the mix ratio between Rustolem and OX Rust is different. Should have gone with what I know. I had no choice in this matter a buddy from Az bought it for me. If this don't work out I'll be heading to Az myself. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

I'd go with the Rusto, and experiment with mixing 2 colors to try to match the color you want.

The Rustoleum mixes really well. Mine is three parts "sand" and 1 part "smoke grey"

sorry, been away from the computer.
