I've found a 8274 in like new condition (10 years old) it has a cast iron hause fairlead rather than a roller set up. In that the price is at the high end for a used 8274..I don't want to drop another $100+ for a roller on top of the winch cost.. for mainly just carrying the damn thing around on the ARB, with maybe once-in-a-lifetime emergency use..will the hause work as well as the Roller?

Steel cable? Then rollers best (lowest friction). And some will argue that a roller with syn rollers is the best for syn cable.

yep steel cable...If I get it i'll post up in "want" for a roller..

I know both guides are for angles..Hell out here there's nothing to anchor to anyway...sometimes not even big rocks, and the ground is often solid lava like desert pavement...not much mud though..maybe that's why I don't need the damn thing anyway....

I've got a poly hawse for my 8274 with the rope...IMO, the cast hawse with the steel cable works, but if you are a frequent wincher, definitely replace. Heck, more than 2x a year I'd replace...and ya might get lucky with a post in Wanted for that, good thot....

I run poly rollers on my TMAx on my 80-series with rope...it works great.

watch craigslist, or your local 4x4 forums...i find rollers for about $50 used quite often

OKAY, so why even offer the Hause if the roller is the way to go? who uses it? It seems to be more expensive when included with a new winch than the rollers?

How you going to get stuck on pavement like surface to need a winch? If you are concerned with getting high centered maybe you just need to carry a Hi-Lift and a few pieces of 2x6...

If you read my post...I already asked myself this question..

Okay I don't need a winch..I WANT a winch...got the high lift..got straps, got chain... want a winch...

The one I want has the iron hause...I'm sold on rollers...since I'm posing anyway..it'll look better on the ARB!

Seriously, I'm planning several runs this spring summer into mud-tree country ...might just NEED that winch. That's what I'm telling my wife..and I'm sticking to my story..

Well for what its worth I travel around in the deserts and mountain ranges of Northern Nevada...which is similar to some parts of the eastern half of Oregon...and I have used my winch to extricate a Jeep, a tree that blocked our travel down a trail...and to give myself a 2' tug over an ice fall/pool a couple weeks ago. Don't leave home without it. And don't let your wifeskee read 'MUD :D . You know the old addage: If you have it you won't need it. And that is good advice for recovery gear in particular ;) . And damn son...stop asking and answering your own questions!
