I have Gaia premium but could not tell by reading their promo if I have to purchase something separate for it to work with Android auto.

I'm far from an expert but I would venture no additional purchase needed. Gaia is very responsive so perhaps ping them.
I have Gaia Premium, and it worked fine in Android Auto.
I obviously don't have a lot of time with it yet, but I didn't notice any problems.
The map tracked my location perfectly while I was driving, no jittery movements or jumping around. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S9.
You do have to select the layers you're interested in from the app on your phone instead of from the Android Auto dash screen, but I didn't realize that at first until I was already back home. I'll try to grab some better pictures in the daylight tomorrow.
Searching for routes is a bit quirky. When you tap the "Routes" button, a keyboard pops up on your phone, and it says you can type from that if you want. It also shows a list of your saved routes, but it didn't show any of mine (I guess because none were nearby).
There are only 3 zoom levels, but I think they were chosen well and keeps it simple.

Nothing really spectacular as far as photos go. Gaia did crash at one point when I kept hitting the zoom button about 20 times. I'm sure they'll sort out these sorts of bugs pretty quickly.
