It's probably a small amount of water. Condensate builds up in the crankcase when it cools off and is left to sit cold, which burns off in the first few miles of driving. I bet that catch can is just catching some of it.

IMO, don't stress about it.

Agree this isnt a big deal. Thats also a quite a small volume.
This is similar to the foamy goop that used to accumulate on my oil filler cap on a 1st gen Tundra with a 2UZ. It would accumulate after a bunch of short drives (2-3 miles) in the winter. Its condensate which accumulates on short drives where the engine doesnt get up to temp enough to boil off all of the condensate. A catch can would almost certainly accumulate more condendate and also be harder to boil off.

Maybe a month and a half. It's finally gotten colder at night these past few weeks so starts have been cold, and I've also been driving it to work in the same time frame.
Interesting.. I have no experience with catchcans on 2Hs.. largely pointless in my view. Condensation does seem likely though. I love your examination of it though!

Another exciting trip to Modesto and back! Cruiser did great, the boost compensator is awesome on the highway!
We took the scenic route over highway 33 instead of the Grapevine. It was snowing on the backside of Pine mountain (barely)! There's still quite a bit of road repair going on where it washed out a few years ago.

And Harumi got her first taste of renewable diesel. No issues and it seemed to stink less.

I replaced the front main seal finally, along with installing a speedi sleeve on the crank pulley. I also went back to an 82C thermostat down from a 90C. I had installed the 90C to try to get a bit more power and efficiency, but that was before I had decided to go the turbo route.

You dont have any concerns about this diesel?

From what I've read, Renewable is nearly chemically equivalent to conventional diesel, unlike B99. I also put in a bottle of Stanadyne Performance every tank regardless of what fuel I happen to be filling it up with to counteract the low lubricity stuff. I've run B20 with no issues also. B99 is what I would be leery about.

Info from .gov

Interesting.. thanks. We haven't seen this fuel offered in Australia yet.

I finally had some time to do the valve stem seals. This was surprisingly straightforward and pumping each cylinder through the glow plug ports in turn with air kept the valves from dropping. The only spring that gave me trouble was the back most against the firewall on cylinder #6. The valve stems measured 9mm OD, the old valve seals measured 9mm ID, and the new valve seals measured 8mm ID. I'd say the old ones were done... Now I just need to find a steep grade to coast down.

I also scrubbed the carbon buildup on the glow plugs before I put them back in.

Happy almost New year!

Not much going on on my cruiser. The front main was still leaking after the speedy sleeve and new seal. On a hunch, I removed the catch can and lo and behold the leaking stopped. Arg. I took the can apart and found the sintered bronze filter element. I thought this might be causing too much restriction so I reinstalled the can with the filter removed. It still leaked out the front main seal, albeit less. Drips on the driveway is still too much. Off it shall stay.

I've mostly just been driving the cruiser, to work, to the hardware store, to the autoparts store, to my tire guy...

I picked up another project I don't need back in March and finally started working on it in earnest this past week. Ugh...

Hello Mud People!
This is the story of Harumi the Rusty Rescue, a poor neglected cruiser full of rust holes. I've wanted a Land Cruiser since I was 16, but ended up getting a 1st gen 4Runner when I was 17 (which was a compromise with the folks, who were footing the bill). The 4Runner served me well through college as a commuter and adventuremobile. After graduation I picked up a MK1 MR2 as a commuter to save on gas and keep the miles off of the 4Runner, also allowing down time on the 4Runner for more involved projects. After the 4Runner was 'done', the focus came to restoring the MR2. It's been a few years since that was done, and I am at the point in my life where I would like four doors and a bit more room. Being particular, I wanted a Toyota, smog exempt, somewhat modern, also old... hmm, tough order to fill in California...

I kept checking craigslist for quite awhile. There were a few early Cressidas, some Coronas, and of course a few FJ55 'projects' that were obscenely expensive. There was even a mid 80's diesel Corolla four door hatchback at one point. None seemed right even though they checked off the boxes. Eventually a few 70 series Land Cruiser started showing up, and if they had California tags, they were two door. Doh!

Then this popped up. Full of rust, leaking everywhere, the ugly quad headlights I strongly dislike.
Perfect! Take my money!

And it's a Land Cruiser!

2H Engine with H55F 5 speed
PTO Winch (functional)
Factory Limited Slip Full Float Rear Axle
High Roof
24 Volt
Right hand drive

Once it's mechanically sound, I'll get to work on the rust! Oh the rust! Horror!

My plan is to make it a roadtripper/explorer/camper:
FJ60 grille/headlights
1. Start
2. Finish
Rooftop tent
1. Structure
2. Extruded Frame
3. Skin
Turbo
1. Baseline Dyno
2. 2.5" Exhaust Dyno
3.Turbo Mockup
4. Turbo Install
5. Intercooler
6. Boost Compensator/Controller
7. Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurbooooo Dynooooooooooo
Selectable rear front locker.
Onboard Air Compressor
Lots of gauges!
1. Start
2. Finish
Stowage for camping gear and tools
1. Orikawa Door Cards
2. Gullwing
Either an auxillary or larger fuel tank
