Did any of the early FJ40's have a bi-folding hatch door on the hardtop. I got one today, and have not seen one before.
Thanks

Yes. These were only found on the corrugated tops, and the last corrugated top was mid year 1965.

Do you have pics?

I just drug this home today, and will post some pics monday. It is a weird rig with a top that pops up like a westfalia. The guy I got it from said it was some sort of a conversion, however I am not aware of any.

OK, now I am curios to see some inside shots with the top up, and with it down :hhmm:

The top is different..

otherwise Looks like late 65 or early 66 hard top with large windshield, short side steps If I am looking at It right ?

mabey a repaint ? badges are missing of the left rear quarter...

thats a first :)

looks like an X-Panda? conversion? but i thought they were only landies...maybe somebody adapted it for a land cruiser?

1960's were big on camping conversions ....ez-camper conversions were in ca in the 1960's

montgomery ward had some conversions stuff also in the 1960's and 1970's.

any stampings? stickers?

I swear that I have seen a few 66s with corrugated tops.

May have been titled as a 66 but would have been a 65 or earlier. Very common in the sixties for a cruiser to have a title for a later year then it was produced. Two of my FJ25s have a 1961 title. The FJ25 was done in 1960. There are a few FJ25s with a 1962 title. The pre 65 wee easier to tell production because the First number in the VIN is the production year.

Lots of bugs, spider webs after sitting for many years. I plan to toss a bug bomb in it this weekend, prior to inspecting and cleaning out the inside to look for any type of identification on the awning.

What about the rear bumper? Home made??

Never seen one like it, so I would say yes. Its pretty cool! At the same time, I love the classic look. Whats behind it? If it is original behind it, I would have a hard time deciding what to do! I would lean towards original though!:meh:

As for the top, what are your plans? Retain it, or restore it a solid top? It is an interesting conversion, and I would love to see if you can get any background on it.

I started to dig through all the crap inside tonight, and found the all of the records, including the original sales purchase order. It shows on the receipt that the bumper is a con-fer installed at the dealer on 9-11-65 when the guy bought it. I did not even know con-fer was around then.

Great stuff!

Keep it all stored dry and tidy...the next owner, should you ever decide to sell, may really be into this type of provenance :)

When did the windshields change from short window vent style, to the tall no vent style ?

From the best I can tell mid 65 was the change. My 65 FJ45 has the vent but I have seen 65s with no vent. Landpimp has or at least he did have one I looked at the last time I made a trip up that way. The corragated top stopped at the same time. The bug catcher vent also changed around the same time.
