I think this was fatigue from the bad diff, just like the other side in the NAPA parking lot.

All fixed now. Jim, I only have one spare axle shaft now to bring to FG :D

Mike, you really have to avoid parking lots.

I pulled my shafts to fix a leaking rear wheel seal last weekend, gave them a good inspection and they didn't show a thing. So if one lets loose, maybe we'll have to hang with the 10 splines are crap crowd.

So is this the match to the one that broke? I have never had a 10 spline axle break. Maybe because I have spares. My 68 with 10 spline axles and Lock-Rights in both front and rear axles. Also have a FJ25 with Torsen diffs front and rear that had been used for plowing snow in the past. Maybe it was run with low oil in the diff got hot then run into a cold stream causing them to be brittle.:meh:

exact match. The only difference was that I was going forward this time. I had to lock the hubs and put it in 4WD to get it into the lot. The diff that was in the truck had a bad pinion bearing. I replaced the diff after the first axle broke, but I never touched the passenger axle other than to remove it to swap the 3rd member. The splines looked ok. I hope this is the last time. It now has two good axles and a good 3rd member and an owner who actually maintains his vehicle. It should go for another 50 years.

Something had to have happened over the like of this cruiser. Stock low power engine, stock gearing, not running over size tires or lockers. You would think they would last for ever.

That's the odd part though, Mike's 25 didn't show any sign of really being used until he owned it, it wasn't all bunged up underneath and was totally stock other than the paint.

On the other hand, the replacement axleshaft he had installed previously came out of the '58 I parted that was the 2WD V8 auto machine with 35's in back, kinda like a sand rail. :hhmm: Maybe they need exercise?

Actually, thinking about it a little I noticed that Mike's broken shaft doesn't really show any evidence of heat treating. I know when I pulled mine last weekend they were discolored bluish/brown a good inch or so past the splines. (I know nothing about heat treating).

The frame horns were pretty well cracked when I got it so someone pulled more than a few stumps out with it.

Once I have another set of axles, they're going to Bobby.
