I have been exploring ways to get water cans outside the vehicle and of course, a gerry can on the back door would work. I have some experiance putting a bike rack on the door and it seem to sag just a bit. Of course when we are driving, it would bounce around.

I have seen GXs with ladders fastened to the door.

Also, it seems that the slot that the door goes into is pretty substantial and could hold up some weight.

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone have reservations on putting things on the door? Anyone have experince with this?

The hinges are the issue. On the Toyota Prado sold overseas, the spare was mounted to the door but with a larger size than factory the hinge the connects to the body will fail eventually.

I was under the impression that the hinge was not the issue, but rather the seam on the door itself that separates with excessive weight.
There are a lot of people who have mounted spare tires (>50lbs) and see a lot of sag, but I'm not aware of any seem failures with the latest tire carriers (JW or Becky/ACC). Overseas is another story that I have not followed.

So 5 gallons of water/gas is 41 pounds. Maybe one by the hinge is ok?

Have you considered a hitch mounted rack? You can find high clearance examples that would hold the can high and close to the body.

Yes that is what fails and I should have been more clear. I was trying to clarify that the hinge side is what fails and not the latch.
