I always tell newbies to grab FRS radios. I can tune my Ham radio to those channels so I can talk to them on a channel and then still tune in the other half of the radio to the Ham folks.
That being said, I'm sure those would work just fine too.

Tim, any radios or brands you recommend. Im looking to get something via Amazon fairly quick. These will be lifetime loaners, so I want something reliable and robust for my friends just to get them committed to a full install in the future. They are all total newbs to the off road scene.

Sure.

A. I have used these and they get the job done. It's hard to spend more and not feel like you're wasting money when the Ham radio's operate on twice or more the power level for a similar or lower price. https://www.amazon.com/Midland-GXT1000VP4-36-Mile-50-Channel-Two-Way/dp/B001WMFYH4/?tag=ihco-20

B. If you push the rules a bit I'll sometimes hand out my handheld Ham radio to a friend and lock it on the FRS channels. It operates at higher power level than an actual FRS radio, but we're talking on the FRS radio channels so I tell myself it's okay. If you go the Ham route the channels you'd need to tune into to reach FRS channel 1, 2, 3 etc are here: FRS and GMRS Frequencies
We tend to use FRS4 as our go to channel:
4 FRS / GMRS 462.6375
