I modified my 93 dash and it now has the lower section of a 95-97 dash (ashtray, 12v outlet, 3 switches) I did this so i can make use of the ashtray opening to house a CB or Ham radio. I have a CB that will fit but after reading all the benefits of a Ham radio I'm leaning toward finding one that will fit in this space instead. Or possibly running both using the CB in the ashtray and then Ham in a different location. If the Ham isn't in the ashtray, what ever location it is in, it has to be tucked away and look like it belongs there.

Call the local Ham Radio outlet @ 800-559-7388 and give them the dimensions you are looking for and how it will be installed (speaker in the front, or seperate speaker mounted elsewhere?)

They have always been super helpful with my questions and enjoy a challenge!

Good luck, let us know what happens.

If it's any help to you, I have a single din radio and a pocket below it. The detachable face plate from my Yaesu FT-8800 fits perfectly in that pocket with a little double sided tape to secure it in place. The head units for ham radio's tend to generate a lot of heat, so when talking to HRO ask about that before buying and burying it in your dash. Last thing you'd want to do is fry the ham unit, your radio and who knows what else. I still run a CB as well, but went to the Cobra in mic set up. Ham is hands down superior and the license requirement for tech is pretty simple.

Thanks Murf I'll give them a call. I think an external speaker that would use one of the dash speaker spots would be a good way to go.

The detached faceplate models I've seen look nice, opens up a lot of possibilities on placement.

My double din stereo opening is full...

Found this, looks interesting. It's the Yaesu FT-1900 on sale at Ham Radio Outlet for $134.95...

FT-1900 on sale

It's not a Land Cruiser (4Runner) but whatever...

FT-1900 mounting

Unidex 510XL (The CB I have) Dimensions: 1-3/8” (H) x 4-1/2” (W) x 6-3/4” (D)
Yaesu FT-1900 Dimensions: 5.8 x 1.6 x 5.8 inches

So just over an inch wider I may have to check out the ashtray opening and see if I can find an extra inch somewhere.
I've already hacked it up so no biggie to do a little more trimming here and there...

Thanks for the heads up, msahr, looks like a great deal.
