While the article quoted an American saying "why pay a half million for a dog?" the article doesn't say that's what they sell for.

Breeders in China say adult Tibetan mastiffs sell for tens of thousands of dollars, and can even go for more than $100,000.

I find it interesting that it is the Tibetan Mastiff that is hot. At the moment, China is busy burying any autonomy in Tibet through the modernization of the transportation corridor and the resulting influx of hundreds of thousands of Han Chinese into what was once known as Tibet. . . .

s***, that is a lot of money for dinner.

****! my friend's tibetan mastiff just died...

Major discount, there is a real premium paid for freshness. There was a show on discovery channel where showed dishes in China where the animal is still wiggling on the plate. They will skin rats in boiling water while alive and then cook them, so they arrive still twitching. They do the same thing with fish.
