Any body have any experience gutting a smog pump? After some research it looks like a OEM costs a small fortune, rebuilt ones/aftermarket don't last very long and I don't really seem to need the smog pump.

Just find an aftermarket belt sized to run everything but the pump.

Don't you have to run the gutted pump? I thought there was a reason to run it.....

on my '60 I gutted it and eventually the thing blew up. many years though. best option is to get a belt that fits without using it or fab a tensioner; IIRC it acts as the tensioner to the water pump, so you kinda need something there.

You either need the pump or fab a tension/pulley. Jim C has one for around $100 and you can check out the "desmogged my 60 thread" for more info. If you want to spend some more money you can use Jim's kit that has the allen head plugs, tension and some other stuff.

Gutting a smog pump: remove pump from vehicle, seperate halves, remove internal vanes, reassemble with RTV, remove air lines and install appropriately sized freeze plugs, reinstall in vehicle. It's really very easy, there isn't a whole lot inside the air pump, you'll see what I mean when you get it apart.

I got a pulley from JimC yesterday in the mail. Planning on putting it all back together when I get the new power steering pump and rebuilt carb back next week.
