Gurgling, slurping

[Southbound]

Those are the sounds I hear when I step on the gas. It sounds like the engine isn´t getting enough gas, or maybe not enough air, I can´t tell. The air filter looks pretty clean. Maybe it´s a problem with the carb? Maybe it´s not a problem at all? The truck runs well enough, just sounds strange.

Air in the coolant lines running to the heater core?

Or, are you getting pinging which sometimes (to me) sounds like the engine is struggling under load and doesn't necessary always sound like a 'ping'

Please know that I am mechanically challenged though so I may be WAY off the mark

ahhh, there's another thread on this forum about water in rear quarter panels.

maybe you too have water back there and the noise upon accelaration is water sloshing around.

My drains will clog ( after swamp running) and hold a gallon or so....

split a toothpick length wise & ram rod the little drains just behind the mud flap...

Huh, maybe has to do with the coolant lines. I´m pretty sure it´s not pinging. I do have water sloshing around the rear quarter panels as I´ve been going across a few creeks lately, but I´m certain the sound is coming from up front...

I wish my quarter panels would hold water. Here in Wisconsin we have 2.5 inches of snow on the ground and 3.8 inches of salt on the roads. Water holding isn't a problem. However, when I was having problems with no heat, I did get quite a gurglin noise from behind the dash. It turned out to be a restriction by the heater valve causing cavitation in the hoses. New hoses resolved the issue.

The gurgling happens most when I´m in 4th gear. Not sure why that would be. I´ve had several people comment on the sound so I´m pretty sure it´s not my imagination.

Yes, I´m still down south. I just crossed over to Guatemala a few days ago and leave tomorrow for a 6 day trek through the Peten jungle to the remote Mayan ruins of El Mirador. It should be an Indiana Jones type adventure and I´m looking forward to driving my rig through some extreme conditions to the launch point of El Carmelita. It´s been a hell of a trip.

I´m still seriously considering a diesel conversion while I´m here. Just about all the vehicles are diesel and everything is unbelievably cheap. I´d be that much more willing to take the leap if I knew there was another Cruiserhead here!

Start out with the temp lever on cold. After the truck is running, slide the temp lever to hot. Do you hear the noise? If you do then its air in the cooling system. I had a 60 that did this. A theory that seemed to fit my truck was that the heater control valve is worn so that when the system cools, air is sucked in. It didn't leak any coolant though.

Mine did the same thing, only after draining radiator and refilling. what i believe you hear is the antifreeze be pumped either thru the engine or heator core at startup. make sure your expansion tank is at the proper level and the radiator is full. proper rad cap and pressure. It seems like the air in the system works itself out after running at hiway speed for sometime.

We haven't been to ElMirador yet. We have done the drive into Uacaxatun outside of Tikal. You need park permission to drive that road though.

I plan to be back in Guatemala by mid-April if all goes well.

My gurgling is back, right behind the radio. I'll check in to it tomorrow evening. I'd bet dollars it's the heater valve again.

Just to let you know, after playing with the heater lever a bit I´m pretty sure the gurgling sound is just coolant sloshing about. I have the coolant routed through the heat exchanger of an onboard shower system. That rerouting was probably the root cause.
