Going to be heading to Gulches in march with some of the UC/LC crowd. The place is in danger of going under which is something i'd like to avoid at the rate the public land is being closed.

March 13th a Saturday.

It's not too far from Charlotte for us guys down here. About the same to Uwharrie.

We should be up for it Al. The Gulches is only about an hour from our place. Even if we cant make it for some reason if anyone does damage and needs to do some repairs the shop is less than an hour away. If anyone wants to travel down Friday evening they are welcome here, not a lot of bed space but plenty of floor and couch space.

We have been going to the Gulches for a couple years now and have never had a bad time. Skip, the owner of the place is a fantastic host and has lead us down a couple trails when there. He also puts on a BBQ lunch most days with dogs and burgers on the grill.

Here is a link to a thread with tons of pics from a Gulches trip a couple years back.

How's the wheeling there? I understood it to be mediocre at best, and the mud was gawdawful. That's about a 5hr trip; I'm willing to do it, but honestly only if I'm going to enjoy it. Call me selfish, but I need something technical to really enjoy it enough to justify the drive. I'll donate money before I'll drive 10 hours for nothing.

Hopefully that comes across right - I'm all about keeping places open, but want to spend my time/money wisely.

I've never actually been but know there is some trails I wouldn't take the 80 on it due to 90% chance of body damage.

If Stan likes it, it must be decent though :grinpimp: I'll let him speak for that.

It is a small park, about 80 acres. Basically it is on a long hillside down to a creek at the bottom. The mud can be pretty intense at the bottom after a rain but for the most part avoidable. There are some good technical trails there, several I would not dare take my FJC up.

Everything is a climb. You go down one of the two outside trails then pick which trail you want to go up. It is not the best park in the world but we enjoy going once or twice a year, it is close for us. They can't all be Harlan :)

Does not look too promising Al. Where did you hear that the Gulches is in danger of going under?

Skip posted a thread on pirate on Jan 3 about either getting a buyer, sponsor, or shutting down

With Diesel pushing $3.60 now, I'm likely going to pass. If they drop back down some, I may change my mind. Towing from here, I'm looking at nearly $175 in diesel alone.

Ouch!!
It would be a little cheaper on the way home. NC,s taxes are more, plus the pipeline dumps out at the g'ville, s'burg area.

That sucks. Skip is a good guy and has put a lot of time and money into the place.

The Upstate guys are onboard with us now, should be a good time.
Campsites are reserved, also

Peterson 4-wheel drive will be there this saturday the 19th taking photos and covering the issue with the mid carolina jeep club. Hopefully some exposure can help bring interested parties or spark some sort of resolution that helps Skip and keeps some more trails open for us in the area.

Making plans now. Post if you guys think you will be coming so we can get a head count for dinner Saturday night. Would love to have you guys out with us. We have 2 campsites reserved for about 8 rigs, but can expand it to 2 other sites for more rigs if we need to. Plus the parking lot is up the road, so if it gets crowded with trucks we can shuttle to the lot, but I don't think that will be necessary.

I might be able to get a registration page started up to keep track of things easier. Stay tuned.

I'm going to be there teaching my brother in law how to drive on the easy trails, I'll be dragging a few friends along but we will just be there for the day so no need to count us into anything.

I think Joe and I may be interested since the Core Banks Overland trip had to be canceled.

I'd be up for traveling, as my father in law lives in Spartanburg and could drop the girls off!

What day are you guys planning on going? Sat is the 12th.

We are only an hour away if anyone happens to tear something up and needs to do some repairs to get home. Worse case scenario, I could go home and come back with a trailer.

yeah I will be there on the 12th but like I said on the easy trails with my brother in law. :hhmm:

No worries there Al, I will be riding with a pal myself. Getting the FJ Cruiser ready to sell and the 60 will not be ready.

We'll be there tomorrow. 4 of us riding in Anthony's 62. We are throwing one of my winches on it tomorrow morning.

My FJC is in the paint shop and Godzilla needs some work before I take it out. All this iron around here and I am without a trail rig at the moment, bummer. I'll have Godzilla up and running for Summer.
