groove in axle shaft

I have '99 Crown Victoria that has a noticeable groove worn into the axle shaft from the wheel bearing. I don't really feel like dropping 180 bucks for a new shaft and I feel like a junkyard shaft could have the same problem I'm looking at now. I was wondering if it would be possible, or worth it, to take it to a machine shop and have them weld up the groove then mill it back down.

<Edit> was thinking seal surface, not bearing surface. Don't know if you'll get the machine work done for the price of a replacement.

A junkyard shaft *could* have the same problem, but since there is no shortage of Vic's, I would think you could find a shaft that did not. That's going to be your cheapest and easiest solution by a long shot.

A speedy sleeve is used to compensate for worn sealing surfaces. If your rear output seal on your Cruisers tcase is leaking because the surface is so worn that a seal won't hold the gear oil in, you can put in a speedy sleeve inside the housing and then install the seal inside of that to stop the leak.
