My wife and I are delaying buying another car (just sold hers) and are going to share the 100 for a bit. I'm going to address a few of the growing list of "issues" that have come up - doesn't fit in some parking decks, can't reach things when they roll toward the back seat (from the tailgate)... But the current issue is the crappy, but best option - GROM VL2.

My phone sometimes pairs. It used to pair most of the time. Now, it takes multiple rounds of: paired, tap to connect - waiting - paired, tap to connect - waiting... But, despite going through the steps to pair my wife's iPhone, it will not pair wirelessly. Is this a thing - will the VL2 work with two iPhones? Any tips?

As I've said before, I really (!) wish Vais or someone had a product close the VLine to get these guys off their asses and work on all the bugs.

I am really really sick of this screen:

I do regularly pair mine with 3 different Apple phones (my personal 2020 SE, work 8, and son’s 8), using “wired” CarPlay, without much in the way of issues.

We found that the “wireless” CarPlay had a mind of it’s own about which phone to pair with, and turned that s*** off quick.

We found that “cheap” iPhone cables could be very temperamental.

Wit

Same experience, albeit with just two phones. Using the wired connection is what works for us.

Thanks @jLB and @saucebox.
Are you guys wirelessly pairing one phone and the others with a cable… or once you beyond one phone, wireless is a thing of the past - and all need the cable?

I totally gave up on wireless, as it seemed to “latch on” to one phone no matter what.

Gotcha. I’ll just try to remember when I had the VL2 before it was wireless - and how cool I thought it was at the time.
Thanks guys

Connect the VL2 to Wifi and download any updates. Doing this fixed similar issues on mine. That being said, hard-wiring to the phone is definitely less glitchy.

@RAMf1 I did a firmware and software update Monday, then a just-released software update yesterday. My iPhone (one) does seem to connect faster - without having to tap to connect tap to connect tap to connect tap...

Initially, even the last software update did nothing. Heath at GROM suggested clearing the phones network settings. This actually worked.
Settings -> General -> Transfer and Reset -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

But yeah, the other phones will stick with the cable.

I'm far more concerned that you intend to lower your lift or remove your roof rack. Please just buy your wife another car. :)

We use two phones with wireless. Sometimes when its trouble connecting to another, I ask my wife to turn off her wifi on her phone to make it easy to connect to mine.
Wired phone connection wasn't much useful. When you unplug your phone everything is lost. Wireless is the way to go.

Also to update. I did a 2000+ mile drive with my kids who wanted to constantly swap the phones and take my phone back to watch as their ipads are charging.
Overall, GROM performed very well. Waze on carplay via GROM is the primary. Also used factory nav as a backup just in case as the factory nav is always present and give me directory even if I am switching from my carplay audio, car dvd system etc. Kids were also watching movies in the center console via disney+ subscription app (via tethered internet from phone) when they ran out of all DVDs.

The only inconvenience is that when we switch from car GROM to DVD, we loose the navigation and waze updates. Also hate that waze is a bit buggy on long distance navigation and cannot route.

But the convenience of GROM to switch without loosing factory nav and factory radio is best.
