I'm doing a cut & turn and using Dave's (4Plus) axle extender sleeves on both sides of housing.
On the short side especially, I had to grind most of the seam weld down smooth getting ready for the C&T, adding sleeves, Marlin knuckles gusset & Ruff Stuff perches.

So wanted to know if I can grind down the rest of the seam welds or if that will weaken the housing?

The rear SF axle housing is getting Dave's FF/Disc conversion bracket/set up also.

I'll take pics of the C&T, sleeves, knuckle gusset, perches and rear SF to FF & Disc conversion build and write it up with lots of pics.

I'll try to find some pics to post of the sleeves & SF to FF/Disc brackets. I haven't ordered them yet.
I want to get the new frame built first then get the housings finished.

Cheers, Allen

Ok, found some pics. These aren't mine I found them here on Mud.

I'm just learning how to post pics so wanted to know if these pics are too big or not?

I'm using the app to post them. Let me know if they are too large.

Cheers, Allen

Good point Dave. I'll grind only as much as needed.

Question tho, what about lightly hitting the welded seams to clean the slag stuff but not grinding them down smooth?

Would that weaken the welds?

Cheers, Allen

First, in reply about the pic size. I think they are just right, better to see the details, at least for these tired eyes.

Second, I'm very interested in your FF rear mods as I've been sold on FF rears for some time. I've owned several 3/4 ton pickups with FF rears. I've seen pics of this mod before and had a bunch of questions about the process, and the finished product. I'm interested in what the WMS to WMS measurement change may be from a stock 40 axle, or 60 series axle. Probably depends on which hubs are used.

Also, I'm not familiar with newer Landcruisers and their brakes. Are there any newer LC that use rear discs with built in E-brake that could maybe be modded to work in place of the discs that this mod was designed to use?

Take lots of pics for me, and others who are also interested in the FF mod.

Hey Don, thx for the pic size conformation.

As far as WMS to WMS, the sleeves for the front add 2⅝" each to the WMS measurement.

Adding ones sleeve to the long side of a 40 housing makes it the same as an FJ60 housing.

A person could put one on the both sides of a 60 housing for something like 63½" front WMS to WMS if they wanted to.

I am using two sleeves, one on each side of my 40 housing and should have right at 61" WMS to WMS.

Don't quote me on this but I think a person could cut the housing tube ¼" to ½" each side to get a ½" to 1" less width.
Would have to check with Dave (Lcwizard here) to be sure.

The rear spindle mounts add about 5" to the rear width for a 59" WMS to WMS.
It requires no machining, just cutting down the flange, clocking the mounts & welding.

Mount FJ60 or late FJ40 front spindles, hubs, bearings & discs. Use either FJ60 or V6 mini truck calipers.
Have a set of double spline shafts made by your preferred axle maker & press on a drive flange.

Now you have a FF with discs rear axle.

I'm going with Mini truck calipers on front & FJ60 ones on rear.

I'm using TSM's new TC disc parking brake.
It will hold as good as the early drum TC mounted one. I'll prob add a line lock also for short term parking backup.

I'll take lots of pics & write it up as I go.

It was not more work than this to cut an fzj80 rear to fj60-width. Toyota factory disc brakes with built-in e-brake and an e-locker. :)

Does 4 plus aka dave make this? Yeah. Dont get to the 40 section much. Link? The rear kit is of interest

U mentioned ur using mini calipers on front. The solid rotor type? If so u might want to reverse that idea and put the solid on back and vented on front

Yes Dave is 4Plus, he goes by Lcwizard here.

He has a web site: 4plusproducts.com

He doesn't have the sleeves & spindle brackets listed on the web sight.
He has other things that aren't on the site.
Prob best to give him a call. Great guy, very knowledgeable & helpful.

That's a good idea.
I'm not familiar with 80s at all.

For me since I have the 40 housings this works for me.

Do you have a write up about shortening & setting up the 80 rear?

I would like to see how it's done.

What I mean is I'm using FJ60 vented rotors both front & rear with V6 mini calipers on front as they have 4-43mm pistons and FJ60 calipers on rear as they have 2-43mm and 2-33.8mm pistons.

Makes it easier to balance the front/rear braking bias this way since the FJ60 calipers aren't quite as powerful as the mini calipers.

I'm using Hydroboost brakes instead of vacuum brakes also.

Keep up the info. Lcwizard hire a teenager to add that stuff. This is the first ive heard about it . But dont come to this section much. Like to hide in the 45 section. Does the full float add width or stay the same?

Fast Eddy, thanks for that info. I'm not familiar with the specs for the 80 series, sooo---- I would also be interested in info/build thread links on this axle. Do all the 80 series have the FF rear, or just certain ones? I'm assuming that once cut down the 80 axle will accept 60 series axles.

The spindle mounts add 5" to the WMS to WMS width.

Here is my rear housing marked to cut down brake flange.
Haven't cut the old spring perches off yet.
You don't have to cut the perches off I'm putting Ruff Stuff ones on.

Haven't cut the flanges yet.
Next day or so will. I'll post pics when I do them.

Here they are marked.

Fancy tool huh?

I'll also start a new thread when I get the flanges cut down.
Prob be a few weeks before I get the spindle mounts for the rear & spacers for the front axle.

Prob will build the frame first.
So may be a bit before I get these finished tho.

Cheers, Allen
