You guys helped with the CB, got that.
Now I need help with GPS. Scene alot of good looking units :D but who has the best off-road software????? , not just routing (shows me where i'v been).

Stan - GARMIN.

If you come up to summer camp on Thursday, I'll show you my Garmin Streetpilot 2730. I've seen the software you can get on Alvaro's GPS. Very nice. Other option may be a tablet PC with GPS software and you can go full on topo.

Garmin also has the Streetpilot 7200/7500 that have a 7" screen. Problem is mounting from my perspective on this one.

Brent,

Does the street pilot have software for street and trail? Do you have to buy secondary software to supplement what comes with it?

I have been a garmin user since they first game out with the III i now have the 276c and wouldnt even think of buying another brand

the 276c is hands down one of the best all around units out there, i have the entire baja loaded into mine and it has been a life saver on several trips!

Comes standard with NavTech street and poi's. Teleatlas is the other company for street and poi's.

Trail software is purchased separately, but a cd with all the national parks, etc in the nation is $90 from mapsource. Seemed to me while looking that there was more aftermarket software for garmin units than others. Admitedly, I didn't look real hard at either Magellan or Lowrance.

This unit looks great, what do the offroad maps look like, are the trails marked? US TOPO? What does that mean?

Garmin has a new 376c, have you had a chance to review it's stats?
Your 276c unit looks great, may have to get that unit.

yeah, pretty much the same unit but the 376c has a "Satellite Weather" option, but for me that option is useless, for some it might be worth it

Thanks for all the input, going with the GARMIN Street Pilot.

BTW - saw an FJ Cruiser on all my driving this past weekend Stan that had a Streetpilot mounted just as you described the way your's is going to be mounted. Looked very nice as I passed him.

I really liked the performance of the 2730 just playing around with it on the trip. Almost too precise. It wanted to take me on dirt roads right out of Camp Whitsett instead of staying on the main highway. Need to figure out how to tell it to stay on major roads. Don't think it knows the difference between paved and dirt roads - just a faster way to get there.

Roads, Who needs Roads? Where we're going there are no roads.

Yea -well, I was in a hurry, otherwise, I'd have followed the GPS. Drive out the northern route over the Western Divide thru California Hot Springs down to Ducor was beautiful. No traffic at 6:00am made it even nicer. Thanks for breakfast Stan. I bugged out of camp right at 6. Damn family of racoons decided to play in the tree right behind my tent and woke me up at 4:21 a fricking m. Tried going back to sleep and finally gave up at 5:45, packed up, grabbed some coffee at the big top and took off. Didn't bother waking you up as it was way too early.

Stan, would you mind letting me know where you found the best deal so I can skip the legwork? :D Also that is the 276 or 376 that Mangler reccomended right?

Its actually a FACTORY option! Very cool setup the way they install it.

I still prefer my 276c though :flipoff2:

The unit is actually the one that Brent recommended:cool: , Garmin Street Pilot 2720. My price was $999, purchased thru Dirty Parts in Culver City, they are doing the install with added speaker and antenna on Monday 8/28. Install is extra.
Brent's initial complaint was that all roads (off hwy or not:D ) are used in the directions, I also love the ladies voice givng me orders:grinpimp: .

Thanks for the info. I will probably go for one without a lady inside. The wife might get jealous. :hillbilly:

It's actually the 2730 with the XM. The 2720 does not have the XM feature.

Just the lady feature, huh? :flipoff2: XM rocks, pun intended.
