Eventually I'm going to break down and do the GPS thing. For now I know very little about them. One question- is there anything available that you can use to tag & track items?

Something along the lines of a chip you could put in/on an expensive item and use the GPS to locate it if it got stolen?

Just hardwire it, and stick it under your wife's seat.

Is that what you were going for? If not, please excuse my answer. I am not aware of any cheap commercial tracking devices.

Yeah, I guess like Lojack. In addition to cars I have seen people get trailers stolen, generators, etc. I wondered if they made a small chip or something that could be attached so you could seem on a GPS device.

Garmin has a dog collar/GPS combo now that will tell you where your dog is. And there was some function on the Rhino's GPS/Radio combo's where you could locate yourself to another person if you both had the Rhino's..

If someone makes tags like your curious about, I bet its not going to be the major GPS names, but a some other company's specialty application.

But like the dog collar, it cant be a passive device. The collar is a transmitter coded to be received by a specific GPS receiver (so I still question its capability? Sounds line-of-sight just like a radio signal, its not bouncing anything off the Sats to make this work). Since the GPS satellites overhead are a one-way signal only, afaik they could not be part of the loop.

There are many companys that have GPS enhanced asset tracking services. Many incorporate RFID as well.

Two years ago I saw an add in a magazine in Beijing that was selling men's underwear and women's panites that had GPS in them and a web site that tracked them so you could see what the wearer was doing (or at least where they were)!:D
