First off IH8 thieves. Was the stereo a stock one? I didn't know there was a huge black market demand for them

As for new/used radios. If you go stock then I'd try to find a used one. Aftermarket I'd go new and I'd keep it basic if your area is prone to theft. I had my stereo stolen from my '83 Toyota PU 3 separate times, each time the face plate was off and the dumb bastards still stole it WITH the alarm going off.

As for alarms...I don't see how a 2nd battery would interfere with an alarm or vice-versa but if you are going to go that route get one with proximity sensors so thieves know there is an alarm before they break in. May not stop them but then again it may. In my experience car alarms are for the most part ignored anymore by your average citizen.

As for LoJack (http://www.lojack.com/), unless something has changed the initial installation covers the first few years and then after that you have to pay to have them come back out and verify the system is still working every so often and pay a "subscription" fee. It won't help with recovering your stereos but should get your 80 back hopefully still in one piece. The installer won't even tell you where the equipment is located (at least that is the way it was 5-6 years ago).

Wow...

I'm sorry to hear that, if it will make you feel better:

We had 2 brand new 2008 Acura MDX's Stolen right in front of my mother-in-law's house, and on top of that, the thiefs stole a 350Z that belong to one of my family members. All this while she was away for a week on a trip. The 350Z was in the garage!!!!! The MDX's were parked in the street and what really ticks me off was that those two were going to be GIFTS for me and my wife!!! (Early birthday and graduation gifts)

Insurance covered it, but , all i can imagine was that the thiefs used a tow truck to take the cars away. On top of this, one of her stepdaughters went in the house over the week and "forgot" to set the alarm to the house :o.......

Now I am just really sick and paranoid and have been thinking about lojacking my 80.

Oh and this was in the Chicago area if you guys are wondering...

Edit: Oh yeah we are still getting the MDX covered under insurance, and this time they will have lojack. I really hope they try to steal it again and when they do i really hope they get caught.

I had my stereo yanked out of my 80 as well, I used it as an opportunity to get an Alpine stereo complete with the iPod controls, XM and all the other goodies. I would definitely go with Alpine...I have been nothing but pleased and they are fairly reasonable as well. The wiring harness was cake to merge and the sound improved drastically even with the stock speakers.

The only real way to prevent a thief is to make the thief think there is nothing there. You could look into some serious window tint, or maybe find another way to cover your interior up?

I've always held the attitude that if someone wants what you have bad enough, they're going to get it....and you're not going to want it back when they're done. Anyway....

Since you asked about a hefty control deck, I'm going to neglect the theft portion of this post. On the current new market the cheapest thing out there seems to be an older Alpine model ($800ish) that is completely touch screen. After having a Pioneer AVIC-D1 in one of my old cars I'm a big fan of the current AVIC-D3 ($999 on Crutchfield). In the 80 series it is nice to have a volume knob closer to the driver's seat and a few non touch screen buttons. It is also easy to set the Pioneer systems up for on-the-move navigation (something you want to check into on any system). Add-ons for the Pioneer are relatively inexpensive and the navigation system is quite intuitive. I've been through an Alpine system in my old S2000 (it was okay), the BMW Nav in both a 525i and M3 (terrible systems) - in fact I put the Pioneer AVIC-D1 in the M3 - and I had the Porsche nav in my 2007 Cayman S - Porsche makes the worst navigation I've ever used, but due to the fiber optics system I couldn't change it out. By far, I loved Pioneer's ergonomics, intuition, and logic over all the rest. For the money, it is a hell of a buy.

Man, that is just wrong.
If I were you I would find a 2005 or newer Scion HU on ebay.
You can get them cheap and know one is going to steal it.
I put one in my 87 cressida which I don't even bother locking the doors.
The beauty of beater - know one wants it

That sucks!

Was it a high dollar system or just stock? I am with others when i say i did not know there was a big market for stolen 80 series radios. Even though there is damage to the dash at least they unplugged the wires.

When I have mine stolen they yanked the radio and cut the wires as far back as they could inside the dash.

(It wasn't me, I was deleting my posts in your bumper thread.)

First of to answer some ?'s
It was a used unit. double decker? any how... I could go with a nice! unit like the ones described here. Or I could get a tuffy console. ??? Now... unless I can place a unit in the stock area.... with some security measures? hmmm.... You know I could really go for some creative Ideas. I would love to place a unit in the stock area.

IH8THEIVES

You could replace it with a single din stereo and a CB...

Exactly why I paid 325$ for the Avistart 4400 2 way alarm. But I have an old LX head unit I believe. You can have that if itll work with your system.

Sorry this happened. I got a used in good shape new (to me) dash (the part you need) from CruiserParts.net for 50.00 I am thinking of getting a nav double din DVD/CD/Stereo for my cruiser. Right now I have a single Kenwood KDC X 889 which I love.

Good luck

I just put a nice Alpine in mine, with XM and iPod controls. As I was doing the work, I too realized how easy it would be to hack into it and steal the whole mess. Especially, not caring about destroying the dash in the process. Sorry to hear about this, but at least it sounds like you're taking the right attitude about it. Do get an alarm, though...

HKS3GTE..... My doors were unlocked. well my uncle has had many radios stolen along with a few broken windows. So he now leaves the doors unlocked. Any ways... Biff's got a bezel but its for a 95? Do any of you know if It will fit my 91?

95-97 airbag truck, have a different dash.
