I'm thinking it would be great to have a backup camera that's wifi or -unlikely- BT and ideally working on batteries so no wiring necessary at all and running on a mobile device. (Note that most of the "wireless" gizmos out there still require power wiring and many use a dedicated display.) Getting too old to enjoy running ugly wires every which way, and I have an assortment of tablets, phones, and laptops that all have wifi and BT and are underused. I'd think that the batteries could last weeks since I don't exactly spend a lot of time in reverse, which would make the battery concept usable. And it'd be easy to move it between vehicles.

Any specific recommendation?

well, I guess there must not be a lot of them out then.
back to the drawing board...

Saw some prospects:

magnetic base, reportedly 70ft range so it could even be put at the rear of a trailer hopefully, camera is battery operated. But dedicated small screen, though.

Nice to have the no wire at all flexibility.

I'm starting to see more out there on the internet.

Here is one that is battery operated (rechargeable) and with wifi connection to phone etc, much more like what I am trying to find:

only saw a couple of reviews on amazon, one very good, one very bad. Supposedly 10m range, which is enough for hitch maybe less so for trailer rear. Suction cup so it could be put inside the rear window, much better. And could be used as dashcam too. So pretty much all the desirable features are there. Only $70. Looks pretty cheesy though. But we're getting someplace...

Seems like everything wireless in 12v has a dedicated monitor. That amazon one you posted looks a little delicate and big to leave on the outside of the vehicle. I got over ugly wires by using wire loom, which should be done anyway. The leap with wi-fi camera seems to be what you will display it on. The best thing out there for ease of use is DVD head unit and a wired camera. I don't like having accessories flopping all over the dash.

I would like to find something like that .. actually there are only couple of times I would like to have a rear camera .. like backing in garage when I know kits at are home .. or some specific tight spot against other car .. but that's like 10% of my time backing up ..

The issue with BT it's to be connected to the camera it will be disconnected from other devices like your headunit ..

There is 1 in Overland Journal 2015 Gear Guide pg 30 made by Rampage prod. that looks like it fits what you are looking for.

any newer and better ones out there that you'd recommend?
it would be nice if I could use it from the end of a trailer, rangewise.

Why not go with an action sports camera? The knock off models are pretty cheap.

If you have line of sight clear between camera and phone you might get some extra distance.

A GoPro Session might be better, its $200, but then you have a pretty cool camera to use when you get to where you are going. But it will make a tempting target if you don't disguise it.

that is a great idea! I did not know these things were so cheap. Much more versatile solution than a dedicated unit, if any good.

I have only used GoPro cameras, so don't know how the knock offs compare.
