Graham, didn't you would swallow more than 15 Schnitzengruben in one sitting.

I'm a Burgengruben guy.

Firefly/ Serenity is (or should be) a cult classic. I cannot turn it off if it is on, I may have seen it 20+ times, even my kids know it well.

Mr. Universe: You can't stop the signal, Mal. Everything goes somewhere, and I go everywhere.

Ahh so it is the big buns then that appeal to you?

Agreed . Best to watch series then the movie if possible , but it does stand on its own. Love the sword scene at the beginning ....

Unforgiven. Spaghetti westerns

Dead Man with johnny depp is one of my favs too. Strange little movie...good soundtrack.

The Firefly series and Serenity movie are great, shame it ended at one season. Many of the classics with Clint Eastwood were great, as mentioned Unforgiven, Pale Rider (there was a series of 3 about the man with no name), Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis is border line western in the 1920's but was a good movie, more realistic than most.
It's funny, apparently in the actual historical "west" the amount of deaths was much lower. In actuality the highest kill rate around those years in any city (in accordance to a couple articles I read) was around 8 deaths a year. You get that many in the first 10 minutes of most westerns. In reality there were not many shoot outs, but there were a lot of stories spread around and people used them to fuel the traffic of interested parties into town and keep business going. In most cases people died from accidents, bad or poor medical conditions, etc.

I cant believe that there have been some very notable miss on our list so far...

first in keeping with the TV series such as firefly and Deadwood... Hell on Wheels ...... 4th season not coming soon enough.

As for a notable big screen miss that has some big actors, Oscar nominations and was John Wayne's last movie...not to mention Lauren Bacall as an aged inn keeper that has a battle of wills with Wayne and a very young Ron Howard.

"The shootist". not your typical western, but a must watch for John Wayne fans and a great character study movie as well.

8 murders a year !! That is less 1/3 of Surrey murder rate in 2013 (25). The 'wild west' looks a a tad tame to the routine butchery in Surrey.

LOMAO

you two are not very good with numbers.

Well, there are several articles on the web. Granted that isn't the most reliable source of info but I don't have time to go to the library or dig up more compelling, supportive articles but here is one:
http://libertarianstandard.com/2010/04/07/how-wild-was-the-wild-west-in-fact/

Maybe when I have more time I'll look a bit deeper and come up with even more info for you.
Have a great evening.

Oh, and of course, if you have more compelling evidence I'm always interested in learning new things so please share some factual information.
Thanks!

incomprehensible drivel is best to ignore

those are some big words Glenn. ;)

Matt saying 8 per city doesnt mean anything unless you also specify how big the city is. ie if there are only 9 people in town, then it is indeed crazy. love how you two high five each other.

now Glenn, Matt, do you guys have a favorite western movie that you like to recommend or do you just want to talk about yourself like dumb blonds.

I'm not talking about myself and I already did recommend a few, if you would actually read as opposed to attempt to irritate some people, or try to create unnecessary friction/drama for your personal entertainment then maybe we could keep a thread on topic. Just a crazy idea, not everything requires pointless jabs or half witted remarks because you're bored. Regardless, as per your request:

Jeremiah Johnson is good (Robert Redford)
Seraphim Falls (Pierce Brosnan) was not bad.
Legends of the Fall, being a borderline chick flick was actually really well made.
The Edge (Anthony Hopkins) was not a western but more of a survival movie, well done.
Into the Wild (not a western) was really good and got into the survival/alone in the bush life (based on a true story)
Quigley Down Under (Tom Selleck) was entertaining but not an oscar performance.
I can't recall a couple good ones I've seen, but as soon as I do you'll be the first to know ;)

My faves are Tombstone and Silverado. I like the spaghetti westerns too but not as much.

Thunderheart just came to mind as an excellent movie, if not truly a western.

thanks Matt. sorry i made you cry again. my bad.

anyway just watched "the ballad of cable hougue"
a bit different western but pretty good.
