Yessiree, sure enough, as all you experienced mechs know, it pays to check the wheels for play every so often. Checked mine, and the DS front one showed a tad of play. Hard to tell how much, but when holding the tire at 12 and 6, I could barely feel it move. I would guess maybe 1/32" or 1/64" of play at the top or bottom. No play to be felt on PS. Took DS all apart, and sure enough, the locking nut was loose. Lock washer was there with ears bent, so don't know what happened besides some mech doing a bad torquing job earlier (I know it had the bearings repacked at a Toyota dealer some 20K mile or so ago, goes to show you...)
Bearings rollers showed a smidgen of coloring and there was a bit of wear on the thrust washer so maybe the bearing was rotating a bit in there. Should be fine now.

Anyway, an easy worthwhile check to do everytime you have the rig up, I would think.

Read the post by Robbie again. The loosening happens to good mechanics as well as DIY mechanics.
You're correct that checking for play is good PM.

looked for any post of Robbie's having to do with "loose nuts" but didn't find any. Hmmm....

That is exactly how I found out my drivers side knuckle needed to be re-built.
