The wife and I will be in the Reno area the 5th-8th checking out the place. We have both applied for several jobs in the area and trying to decide between Reno and Boise. Any suggestions on places to stay away from while we're scouting out the area? I'll be popping in on the BLM and USFS offices to talk to some of their guys (I'm a fire fighter) and I think the wife had planned on trying to talk to a couple of jobs she had applied for (cop).

If any of you want to meet up that would be cool too. We fly in sometime Wed night and leave Sat around noon.

Thanks,
Brittain

Brittan,
The areas will largely depend on what you're looking for.
I live in south Reno in an area called damonte ranch. It's very suburban, clean and quiet. It's also backed up to desert and mountains to the south and east. I can air down my tires in my drive way and get into some good wheeling!
There are places further out in pretty much all directions w/ property and depending WHICH direction the cost of said property will vary.
I moved here from Chicago 16 years ago and LOVE it here!!
We also have amazing wheeling all around us, everything from mild to wild!
Ocean is 4 hrs away, Death Valley is 6-7 hrs, rubicon (from loon lake entrance) is 4 hrs away, hunting, fishing, skiing/ snow boarding (when there's snow).
I'd have a really hard time finding a better place suited for me to live as an outdoors lover.
Post up a bit more of what you're looking for and well try and help out w/ what we can.
I will admit... I didn't always love this place!!
It did take me a bit to get used to and really appreciate. It wasn't till I started GETTING out doors and taking advantage of the FREEDOMS we have here that I really began to enjoy this area.

I'll be out of town the first week in February or I would be happy to meet up.

I don't think that you can go wrong with either Boise or Reno, they have a lot of things in common. If I were in your situation I would probably choose the one with the best job options.

I have been in the Reno/ Tahoe area now for 2 years from Boise. I must admit I miss Boise but have learned to appreciate the proximity to the bay area and of course Lake Tahoe is one of the most scenic places on earth. I like Keith live in South Reno now but lived in Sparks the first year I got here. Both have advantages and disadvantages depending on where you are working ?

I'm with Harry on the Job options right now. Weather here is better in my opinion..

Depending on if you have kids and what you are looking for in housing there are a lot of options on where to live, I live south of town like Keith and the schools are better here.. but housing costs are a little higher..

I have a 2 relatives, in one in forest service and one with contacts in the fire department, I will see what I can learn for you.... Due to the split with reno and truckee meadows fire, the fire departments are restructuring and don't really seem to be hiring. but BLM may have something..

Law enforcement wise there are options here depending on her back ground a specialty..

If you have any questions while you are here post up or PM,

Not to brag but we have a great club of good people, If I am in town while you are here you are welcome to stop by and talk cruisers and what it is like to live here..

Good Luck..

Thanks everyone for the input so far. We're both not much of a big city people. She doesn't do well with traffic (brings out the angry crazy in her). We have 2 fairly large dogs and prefer a quiet neighborhood. Obviously, whatever we get has to have at least a garage. No kids, not sure when/if they are in future. Not really into the gambling casino scene. I want to say she's on the list for Washoe County Sheriff, Nevada Gambling, and something else. I've been a structure fire guy, but I prefer Wildland. I've applied to pretty much all the stations in the area that had openings. I figure our actual location will be somewhere between our two jobs.

She's been a cop for 4 years now. Was/is the Sex Offender officer for her department. She works for a small department so she get's to play a lot of rolls which helps experience wise.

Rayjon, I have talked some with the BLM and USFS as most of their applications had to be in already, but I will not say no to any extra help.

Thanks,
B

Reno is enough of a city for me to live outside of it... :)

I'm 45 minutes away from the airport down in the Carson Valley. For police work, there's Carson City police and sheriff offices, Douglas County sheriff, misc. state/capitol police offices, etc. For fire, multiple fire districts with Carson City and East Fork being the two largest ones.

Just to give you more to consider... :)

Was going to suggest you guys take a trip down into Carson City. Fairly city enough but still tucked away to be quiet. If you look for house here let me know as my MIL is a real estate agent and can possibly help.

PM incoming.

Both WCSD and RFD have facilities just north of Reno on Parr (and Spectrum) Blvd. I would suggest you also investigate the Golden Valley area for it's proximity and because the min parcel size is 1 acre with several nice homes still under $200k. Oh, and there are lot's of cruisers up here in the neighborhood...and you can drive out the back of Estates Drive and into the desert wilderness farther than your tanks will take you.

Cool,
Thanks all. Looking forward to the trip in a week.
