As the title says, I will be hauling the family out to Assateague Island for a weekend of camping. Im planning on picking up an OSV permit to make the most of it, but is there anything specific I should checkout or try to hunt down? Thanks!

This time of year, be prepared for major wind. I have seen more than one tent take off from the campground never to be seen again. Bugs should be gone. And if you have them, I would bring one each of a surfboard and a fishing rod :) Also, the national park has no warm showers, but you can pay the entrance fee to the state park to access theirs if you wish.

I went camping there with my family in April 2011; it is a nice place to be, but as advised, it may be windy. Our trip was rainy and windy, but it did clear for a few hours at a time.

There is a visitor center a mile or two west of where the road splits between the National Park area and the State Park area. I recommend visiting the center.

I bought an annual beach pass, though it was more expensive ($90 IIRC). The daily pass for having a vehicle on the beach was something like $30, IIRC. Riding on the beach was fun (a new experience for me and the family).

You will likely see Ponies regardless of where you choose to camp. We saw several small groups of 3-5 Ponies throughout the course of two days.

Can't remember if the permit requires you have a suitable stand for your jack, but you will def want to always bring one for sand. Wow, been many years since I last visited there. All I can remember were the savage greenhead and deer flies.

Good luck on the fishing.

take and go to there website they have a listing of all the equipment you will have to have in case u get stuck. Decent sized list. Make shore u take the stuff with you. Its hard to gather everything down there,. Your definitly gonna need a jack. A board for the jack to sit on. Spare tire. tow strap. and im pretty shore they want more then that. if you dont have it you wont be alowed access. I prefer cape hatteras north carolina. been about 3 or 4 years since i went. But it was always much nicer more fun less crowds. And less dnr pressence if u wanted to have some mild high speed fun. Pluss every entrance to cape hatteras beach you can buy beer across the street from . Take srf rods 1 ounce bucktails some large 1 ounce diveing lures and buy some 2 to 3 ounce sinkers and large hooks. the Rockfish striped bass have been starting there anual run. along with other large fish will be running this time of year.

how did your trip go. you cant be posting your going and not show some pics or update us . ;)

The trip went really well. The first night out was quite windy i would guess pretty contestant 20-25mph winds. I felt a little sadistic watching the poor late arrivers trying to pitch their tents, only to give up and leave after 20-30 minutes. Saturday was cool, but there was brilliant sun. All said it was a great mix of sun and no crowds. The only major downside was the i am pretty sure the diner we eat breakfast at on the drive home was the source of the nasty food poisoning that pretty much destroyed me for the better part of the next week. But here are the highlights shots:

The best part was that we had miles of beach to ourselves all weekend!

Talk to me about the OBX, should Cape Hatteras be on the top of my list for the exploring this fall/winter? Do any of the campgrounds in the OBX area have electric hookups? I want to take advantage of the mild weather and head south for more camping before winter really sets in.

Matt

There are a few nice campgrounds in obx. There is restricted driving down there on the beach. Go to NCBBA's website they will have the info on driving on the beach. There is a permit required, if memory serves it is 50$ for a 7 day permit or $150 annual permit. The have closed several parts of the beach to vehicles because of the migratory animals and so forth but still plenty of sweet scenery. . Another option for you could be Corova beach which is on the north end of obx. No restrictions or permits there and there are wild horses. No camping though.

Good luck and enjoy

hes talking about corola and the town of duck on the north end of obx island. thats where i prefer to hang at my self when i go to obx. i love the obx just been couple years since i been down there.
