I recently noticed the glow plug light coming on after the motor had started. The time delay seems variable - about 50 secs when cold ( ambient here is around 15 deg C) and 8-10 when hot.

After a little investigation, what I have found so far is that from cold, with the ignition key in the 'glow' position, the glow indicator comes on for ~ 3 sec, power to the busbar comes on for 8 sec, off for 2, on for 3. If I start the truck when the dash light goes out, it starts just fine, and there is power to the busbar as soon as the engine fires, and as far as I can tell, stays on.

I'm thinking faulty timer, but despite taking most of the dash panels off, I've not been able to find it!

I have a copy of a FSM for the 1HZ, but it's dated Feb 1990, and lists HZJ70, 73, 75 and 80 series as applicable models, so I'm not confident the diagnostics ( even if I could find the bl***y timer!) are relevant.

Questions;
On a 2003 HZJ79R where is the glow timer located?
Any other thoughts what the problem might be?

Cheers for any help!

How long does it stay on after the engine has started? Is the 50 seconds and the 8-10 seconds that you refer to? If it stays on indefinitely, ie until the engine is stopped again something is wrong. If it stays on for 8-10 seconds in hotter weather and 50 seconds when cold, I believe that's the afterglow function operating correctly. My experience is mainly limited to the 2H, but it may be somewhat relevant - on a 2H with superglow, when you turn the key to 'on' the glow controller hits the 6v glow plugs with ~12 volts for 3 seconds or so and then reduces to 6v for I think, up to about 50 seconds (number may be wrong) to help her get a bit of heat into the cylinders and smooth out the idle a bit. So, the long and short of it is, if the power stays to the busbar indefinitely, something is wrong with the timer or one of the temperature sensors. If it cuts after a certain time, I think that's normal. Can't help with the location of the timer on the HZJ79.

EDIT - Sorry, I re-read your original post...staying on indefinitely is definitely not normal. It could be a temperature sensor playing funnies or the timer may be kaput.
Sorry for the irrelevant rave!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've had the glove box out and I'm fairly certain it wasn't there - I'll check again this morning. Is it possible that the glow timer function is taken care of by the emission control computer?

This afternoon, I checked, and found that the EGR controller has a wire going to it from one side of the glow relay coil, so it looks like it does control the glow plugs. The other side of the coil goes to the chassis.

Has anyone had any experience of repairing or replacing the EGR controller?
