I have 6 Toyota Diesel Glow Plugs - NGK Y-178T 20.5V for sale.

These will work on all non-superglow B and H engines (B, 2B, H, 2H) or 3Bs that are wilson-switched.

I bought these a bit ago and then found out I needed 14V. Never installed or used... All test out good.

$10 per plus the ride.

PM sent-

Pete

Sold, Thanks Pete!

20.5V vs 14V

BreckenridgeCruiser, I saw these for sale and got all exited 'cause I thought I needed 2 more 20.5v plugs, but your comment about the 14v has me wondering.
Your in a BJ44v with a 2b and a 24v system without Superglow right? I thought that set-up took 20.5v and that's what I'm running. The performance has been only so-so, but I chalked that up to 2 new VSP PT-109 and two older NGK which still test ok on the old Ohm meter. Am I actually in need of a 14v plug? If so, do have some part numbers that I could use to try and chase some down?

I have the superglow... Model year 1981 (8/80 and later build date) got the superglow. There are some random 1981s that have the old direct glow system. You can tell by the orientation of your water pump which setup you have... If your rad hose goes to the right, then you have the old system. Left and you have the Superglow System..

What truck is this for and what build date?

K

My 11/80 2b is a standard switched 20.5 plug and has the rad inlet on the left. I didn't know there were 2b's with superglow. Interesting! Is your truck a JDM Kraig?

Pete

Yup. JDM. Superglow became the standard for the 1981 model year. JDMs just seemed to also be where they were a little lax on Model Year changes. My truck has some 1982 stuff as well for some reason (dash plate instead of one peice). My build date is March1981

My build date is 11/80, and from what I can understand I have a manual glow system. I have the glow controller (little speaker-looking 3/4" window to the left of my gauge cluster), and a "GLOW/ON" switch on my dash.

I am of course a day/week/whatever late, because I think these that were for sale here is what I need for my 11/80 (1981) BJ42 3B.

If you have the litle glow speaker that gets red when the glow plugs are on, you have the standard glow. Mine is a march 1981 build and I have all of what I call the "3B" stuff on my 2B.

In 1982, toyota stopped making the 2B and all rigs came with the 3B and h55 (with some random exceptions). They used the JDM rigs to play with newer technology, but wanted to use up old stuff before moving to the new stuff. A great example is the mixtures of engines and transmission in 1974 fj40s here in the states....

It makes sense that your 11/80s still have the "older" setup as they were probably getting rid of it as all JDM rigs in M.Y. 1981 eventually went to superglow and left side rad hoses (from the driver's seat).

Just to confirm, are you talking about your rad inlet being on the left when in the driver's seat or from in front in wrenching position? If you have a driver's left rad top hose on your rad and a standard glow, that is definitely a strange bird as that means they are using old glow system, but new cooling system.

For those interested, they moved the rad inlet to make room for the more common power steering on the 1981 BJ42s, BJ60s and other 3b equipped rigs. The old water pumps caused some interference issues with the power steering pumps.

Was it the water pump? I know the thermostat housing causes an issue- which is why I need a the later one so I can fit the power steering stuff.

Pete

I meant the waterpump/thermo/hose as one unit... They reversed the setup to get it all on the other side for the pump...

So...take a look at this original setup. This was a standard glow system (late 1980 / 1981 model bj42) like mine.

Notice the waterpump pointing driver side - and the thermostat housing pointing passenger. THIS is exactly how mine will be in the end, with 20.5v glowplugs.

Sorry... to clarify, that is a perfect example of the pre1981 MY Spec BJ4x. I say that because the Top Rad hose goes right (vs. left) from the thermostat to the rad. The lower hose on the water pump is always on the left side regardless of year, but there is a difference in the bypass IIRC. In this case, it is a 1981 MY buts still has the 1980 spec stuff on it. Sometime between 11/80 and 2/81, they made the changeover on my JDM.

I also try to never use driver's side vs passenger as I have a RHD and it is too confusing. AFAIK you say right and left based on being in the driver's seat and not facing the front of the car...

BTW. I was using the term water pump to represent the whole WP/Thermostat setup as I was only really talking about the top hose location. Sorry for the confusion.

@dallas - I can also get some more of those plugs if you are looking... send me a PM.

Actually, You are in the middle of April... The date on the site I believe to be the last VIN to roll off that month.

Mine is BJ44-002769 which puts me right int the middle of March.

What is strange is that I have a lot of newer parts on my truck. I have the silver dash plate, passenger side step on the door entrance, and the pads on the hard top (the only part left of the original seating) is grey and not the white/red that you have...

My only guess is that there were different configurations based on seating and load capacity. Maybe mine is different. I think there are a few other 1981s rolling around with the same setup as me...

I'll do some more research and see if I can figure out what my extended model number is...

thats curious indeed... :hhmm:

the type of dash is never configuration related, onlt time related.,
mine is a KCY, I think yours is also, but mine came with the L package, which included the white upholstery and chrome trim. if we are from the same time period we should have the same technical setup. only the softtop 44 had different seating (smaller folding chairs, not the forward facing bench)

I always thought that the newer dash was introduced late 1981-early 1982. before it became the bj46 in the last 2 production years. maybe your cruiser is a test vehicle, or one of the previous owners swapped new(er) stuff from a crashed donor car in your cruiser like the dash and superglow.:hhmm:

whats this passenger side step and pads on the hardtop you are mentioning?
any pics?

would be interesting to make a list of all the bj44 Vin's we have @ mud for comparison.
:bounce:

thanks for the reply, the plot thickens..

The pads are the arm rests that bolt onto the hard top sides where the rear seat would be if I had one. it's all that is left of the original seating in my rig.

The side step is a plastic step bolted in between the door jamb and the seat hump on the passenger side. Mine is the only truck i have seen this in, but it fits too well for it to be aftermarket. I will try to get a picture of it. As for the dash, it is integrated into the harness (clock and such) so I have to assume that it was factory. There are no indicators my truck has ever been in an accident, and since it has original paint under a coat of rattle can (I assume to fix a bad clearcoat issue or the beginning of surface rust as the paint underneath is pretty decent) It looks like nothing has been messed with.

Also, I will start a new 44/46 thread to try to figure out what everyone has and when it came out... I think that will be fun... Check in the diesel forum.

Do you have a picture of the holes in the wheel wells before you put the seat back in? I would love to see which holes are supposed to be there and which are not. I will eventually be welding in any holes the PO drilled that don't belong.
