Hey all,

I'm sorry I don't know the exact name of this piece I'm having trouble with, but I'm hoping the pictures I attached will help.

This is on my 1980 Hj47 with H2 engine.

I was driving the other day, when the glow plug relay in the dash automatically activated and started glowing. I assume it was some sort of short in the wiring, but I didn't noticed it until it had started smoking. I panicked and hit the button again to activate the glow plugs and it shut off.

Now, the engine won't start, so I'm assuming that this part burned out and now the relay is incomplete and the glow plugs cannot start.

I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get another one of these parts? I'm struggling also because I don't know the exact name of it. I'm also wondering if anyone has some insight as to why this could have shorted randomly. It was kind of scary.

If this helps, the part has the following letters/numbers on it:

Dash Glow Plug Controller Toyota Landcruiser 40 Series - HJ45 & HJ47

I dont know why the engineers decided that incab glowing was the same as inengine, really stupid unless you light cigars with it.
If you look at the bolt that thing is a lot of amps, I think an amp meter will also work if you know the range it operates.
That thing sucks the battery for sure, attach wires from glowplug to cab with a 24V (or is yours 12?) lightbulb and you have the same effect.

I dont have a wiring diagram for this but is the + directed to the engine and does this thing act as a fuse?

Hi Gromit

What button?

I thought your cruiser should operate preheat only via the ignition key...

Sounds like you have some non-OEM wiring and a non-OEM preheat button there. And if so, I think that's likely to be where the fault lies that caused the preheat to activate by itself while you were driving.

And that site often shows items that are no longer available and that will NEVER be restocked.

Getting a good used glow controller is probably your best bet if that one's blown.

But if it has blown ... it suggests to me that you're probably running the wrong plugs (as well as having the fault that caused preheating to initiate by itself).

As Tom said; is your glow system modified?

......Rudi

Definitely the correct part number for a glow controller for a 1980 HJ47 there Rudi.

So hopefully Gromit can buy one new.

No harm in trying Toyota quoting that part number anyway.

(I don't know why I had the idea they were no longer available.)

PS. With a glow controller you should be running 8.5V plugs Gromit. (However I have a suspicion you may be running 6V plugs instead. And if so, that would explain why your glow controller failed.
Only HJ47 models fitted with the "superglow" form of preheating should be running 6V plugs.)

Hey guys, thanks for all the helpful responses. Sorry for lagging, been busy and the free time I've had has gone to the truck!

Found out that the relay part didn't burn out, but the battery was completely drained. Now I'm trying to figure out whether or not it's an issue with the battery or the alternator. Since there was a short, I'm guessing it may be the latter.

Good news though is that she is running! Woohoo!

I've learnt a number here. I have a 1980 hj47 12V 2H motor, according to some of the information I've read on this platform and in this thread, i see that a 12V uses 8.5V glow plugs? or can I still fit something like a 11V glow plugs?

also would like to know how the glow control system is wired, where exactly should the yellow black strip cable connect to onto the glow controller and how does it connect the battery? (Cable identification is key i suppose).

I had an electrician work on my ignition system and we replaced the original with a universal ignition and fitted it in the place of the glow control. he disconnected the glow controller and cut the cable, i kept the controller and figured this will be useful later and clearly it is so i kept it. Now i'm having issues with cranking the engine always have to push to start. I tried heating the plugs individually by using a copper cable, connecting one end on to the battery and the other on to the glow plug and it often worked, but not anymore. So I'm thinking maybe i need to replace the glow plugs but before i can do that i need to have answers to my questions above and anything else i might be missing.

Please help

Old thread and some of the original posters are no longer active on the forum.

First is to pull and test the glow plugs. When these overheat, they can melt and drop metal into the cylinder which can destroy the engine. Make sure all are intact and if they are not testing good with a volt meter, replace them with the stock rated plugs.

Once you know the plugs are good, start working backwards. If you had someone bypass the controller, the system 'should' be simple.

Let us know what you find and maybe we can help more.

Thank you.
I actually managed to test each glow plug and they were busted only one was working. The man that rewired the ignition messed up the glow plug line. So i rewired the original ignition back and installed new glow plugs 12V, the car starts just fine after about 30seconds of pre-heating. I just need to connect a glow controller for visual observation.

Does the HJ47 use a longer steering dumper or a short one?

Steering dumper?

Hi, does anyone know where I can get the glow plug controller for the HJ47 or a replacement?
