Pardon my 'greeness' but I'm new. Posted a thread the other day regarding electrical issues on my new-to-me 79BJ and was recommened to post it in the international section...so here goes.

New to the cruiser family with a fairly stock 79 BJ40 (minus body issues). I have done some tracing and some fixing to get my glow circuit going again, but to no avail. I have had the ignition assembly rebuilt (you could start it with a screwdriver cause the key would fall out....potentially through the floor...long story), and have replaced the relay at the advice of my parts guy. However with all this I still have no glow from the glow indicator coil. Starter turns plenty, and even holding the ignition for 30 secs yields nothing. I have tried to find a decent wiring diagram for the 24v system for 79BJ, but that too comes up zilch. So.....as I said, new to the cruiser family, 4x4 and the west coast...and starting to get a little frustrated as I seem to cruising the curb, more than the streets or trails. Any advice for troubleshooting a diesel would be much apprecieated (thanks to the suggestions posted on the other forum).

I had a problem with my BJ42, where that coil was actually burnt through on one side so the circuit was broken it is an easy place to start looking anyway even if that is not your problem.
Good Luck

I was going to suggest the coil too. It is in-line, and simply a "coil" that resists, heats up and glows, in conjuntion with your glowplugs. I accidentaly fried mine a number of years ago, and Toyota still made a replacement.

When I have had a glow system fail, I have taken some 10 gauge wire, and simply gone from the battery + to the glow plug busbar, holding it on starting at 5 seconds, then moving up, till it would start. At least this way you could get it running.

If that does not float your boat, I've heard of pouring hot water over the top of the engine to warm things up and get it to kick. Never tried this one though.
