So....how well do you think any of those hybrids would hold up to this:
I basically just made the same haul as we made to Harlan a few weeks ago, except this time, I'm carrying at least 1k pounds more. The military trailer is MAXED, and the 40 is full as well. I actually had to lower the pintle hitch on the trailer to raise it back up to level because the rear shackles are bottoming out on the frame over small bumps.....that's how much crap is in the trailer and the 40. I'm talking LOADED!
On the way up to Harlan in October, I was pulling 1200 degrees on the exhaust very quickly on those long grades and actually had to shift to third (ouch) a couple times to drop the temps....all with just tires and my camping crap.
I finally hooked up the intercooler for this trip, and oh man what a difference.
I pulled all those hills at least at 60mph and kept it under 1000-1100 the whole time. I fueled up, checked the gps, and managed a cool 21.6mpg through all that. Pretty sure the rig is around 6k pounds at the moment with a drag coefficient around a brick wall.....oh, and did I mention that this truck is over 30 years old?! So, why oh why, do we need the gov't forcing hybrids on us for the sake of improviing fuel economy????? Holy snikey, if we threw that motor in a Prius, I bet we could drive to California and back on 4 tanks....well, not really, but there's no way a prius could even pull the trailer, let alone keep it's economy through that.
