Can anyone speak to their experience with either tire? I'm going to go with a 275/70 17; here are the specs for both:

General:
E load; 59lbs; 32.2" dia; 11" sec. width

Falken:
C load; 57 lbs; 32.4" dia; 10.8" sec. width

Car is a daily driver with highway miles during the week and forest roads on the weekend. Lots of snow in the winter. I'm leaning towards the Falkens as the 6 ply would probably ride better on the road, plus they have a very good reputation in the snow. The Generals are only 2 lbs heavier per tire though, also have great reviews, and would be more durable off road. They're roughly the same price. Anything else I should consider?

I have the Falken's on my GX470 in a 285/70 17 E rated. Living in Utah and hitting heavy snow up to some trails and resorts during the winter I never got stuck in the snow. They're quiet enough for daily driving and I have good traction all around even in wet/icy road conditions.

I was also able to get a wicked good deal on the Falkens which is what most of my reason for them was ($200 in rebate cards from Discount Tire, $140 in rebate cards from Falken).

I've had them for about a year and put about 9,000 miles on them, tire wear has been really even and they're still quiet. They don't feel like E rated tires I've had before, had some E rated on my Surf in Japan and they just felt like rocks.

no real experience with these tires myself, but i've been shopping around for tires similar to you...

a friend who offroads quite a bit (no heavy wheeling, but overlanding kind of stuff), was impressed with the 4-ply falkens... based on his recommendation, i'm probably going with the falken wildpeaks in the P285/70r17 4-ply size

Yep, (Although not mentioned here) Been a fan/owner of the General GrabberAT2s for for the better part of 5-6 years on a Toyota Product. Now also fan/owner of the ATXs with much Success. Partially due to, but not limited to, @Scat Adams and, Expedition Portal's report.

Went with the Falken AT3/W on my wife’s GX. Paid $560 for 4 285s through a sale at Discount tire. Living in Vail we saw plenty of snow this winter and the tires do great in it. Haven’t had a chance to test a lot off road yet but I certainly will and I expect them to do well. They’re load range E, and while noticeably stiffer than previous tires, the ride is not super stiff like E tires I’ve had on work trucks.
No experience with General personally but also heard good things about them. I don’t think you “need” the stiffer sidewall if she is picky about ride.
