Gearing, Intercooler BJ74 Questions

I am planning a trip to Alaska next year. We are lookink at pulling a small trailer that will weigh in around 1800lbs. My 87 BJ74 has a 13b turbo. I am currently running 31" Geolanders but will have 33" soon. I do quite a bit of highway right now. I have heard that adding an intercooler will increase my boost preasure and not have any effects on the engine. I am considering a higher gear ratio to acheive a better mpg an the highway. Am I on the right track here or am I kidding my self with unrealistic expextations of my cruiser. I bloddy love the thing and plan on never getting rid of it. I would just like to help it fit me. Any opinions and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I just did Alaksa this year in my BJ74. No trailer, however the vehicle/gear/people weighted close to 7000lbs. Heavy 35" tires, 4:11's and Marks 1:08 underdrive in high range.

I would suggest keep your 4:11's, put a free flow 2.5" exhaust on it, shim or granger the wastegate to open between 10psi and 11psi, and run the 33's. You migth want to consider a snorkle to being air in from the outside and get rid if that over the rad air pickup. Also put on Pyro and Boost gauges. Drive to the pyro. You will slow down on the hills, however imo I was okay with the performance...and we were on a timeline. If you can slow down and smell the roses on the way there and back...the hills are no worries at all!

So with a pyro I do not need to worry about adding an intercooler? I cannot bear the idea of putting a hole in the side of my fender for a snorkel. I love the look and purpose, but the HOLE!!! How can I make sure it ain't going to start rusting there? Wil any of this address a better mpg.

Greg, did you ever get more doors in?

Zach,

I am running BFG 33" and have no problem pulling my trailer fully loaded with camping gear with three adults an a dog in the cab....

Installing a pyro and boost gauge is a short day job.

If you want to borrow my tap for the pyro install PM me.

If you get a proper snorkel (IE Safari or similar) then the hole is not even noticeable as it's covered in the entirety. They are also cut professionally and should be touch painted before being covered with a rubber sealant. The pipe is -then- passed through and the covers fitted.
