G'day everyone, I was thinking of putting a by pass hose between my 2 filler plugs on my box and t case. I was wondering if there is a proper way to run the hose as should I have it bowing down or pointing up, or wont it really matter. Cheers.

Being flexible, gravity decides where it sits

The only advice I can give is run it as short and straight as possible no good having a big loop in it.

They come as a complete unit.

Do you mean which holes do you plug it into? Filler plug on gearbox to filler plug on t/case.

I've never understood how this works since the transmission filler hole is considerably higher that the T-Case filler hole. Please explain.

When the seal goes it usually pumps oil uphill from the t/case to the gearbox. Unfortunately, if the oil flows downhill there is no cheap fix

OK. Mine has always flowed from transmission to TC - so my TC is overfilled and my transmission is low. So sounds like such a hose is not a cure for my BJ70.

wouldnt it be better having a loop in it as it will act like a water trap like on a dunny. so as it fills the loop up it will stay at that level

Work fine as they are. The oil fills up in the g/box, runs downhill to the t/case. Once the hose is full, it overflows into the next chamber, why complicate it?

Nice write up I see you made your hose have fall to the t case. Guess as the transfer case fills up the gearbox it will drain back. But what if the gearbox fills up the t case how would it work with how u ran ur hose.

It doesn't, it only works when the oil can run downhill.

G'Day Fella's,

As RoscoFJ73 suggested (and if you read the contents of the above link), the problem with the internal shaft seal leaking between the T/Case and G/Box is, gear oil then migrates from the T/Case into the G/Box. The G/Box then overfills with oil, and oil overflows out thru the gear shifter, at the top of the G/Box.
By installing the external hose, the gear oil can now drain from the over full G/Box, back down hill to the T/Case (not the other way).

I hope that clears that up.

Doh!

Hi before doing this mod make sure nut on end of mainshaft is tight ,oil can get through here too, being loose adds to more problems. Cheers

If you read this thread and want a hose I make them using a Teflon hose with a stainless steel braided outside to shield the hose from heat the exhaust pipe causes.
