Hey guys,

I have a 105 series cruiser with a 1HZ, I'm about to drop the gearbox oil as it's getting a bit hard to get into 1st, 5th and reverse. I have been able to undo the fill plug (24mm hex socket), but the drain plug is something completely different and much bigger. All the reading I have done tells me the drain plug on the gear box should be 24mm as well, but it's not the case?

On a side note, when I finally got the fill plug undone oil came pouring out, I assume that it is because the seal has gone between the gearbox and transfer? Does this now mean they "share" the oil between them?

Cheers,

Dion

Before you start, order enough of these to do your whole truck. I bought 3 kits to do mine, I have 2 plugs left over as spares.

Those recessed plugs seize and you'll never get them out.

Having oil come pouring out when removing the fill plug does not always mean a seal went bad, it could have just been the angle you were at or overfilled by who ever did it last or contamination from water ingress.

You can overfill by filling it while at an angle that faces the fill plug higher than level.

I agree with what spike said about too much oil in transfer case

It should be the same; it is on my 105. Are you sure you're looking at the right things on the transmission? I'll try to get a photo of mine when I get a chance.

Thanks for the replies guys. The cruiser was on a level piece of cement, but one of the shocks has blown, so perhaps that could have caused it to spill from the fill hole, or the transfer is to full, will look at that during the week.

RangerDownunder - That would be brilliant if you could get a pic or two, there isn't much on the net specific to 105 cruisers. The fill plug is about halfway up the passenger side of the box and the drain plug is down the bottom on the drivers side and sits out slightly if that makes sense? I thought they would have both been 24mm, but the drain looks like it is a 27 or 28mm...

Cheers,

Dion

Yeah, sounds like you've got it right. Maybe somebody at some point put a non-OEM plug in? Because mine are definitely both the same as you can see in the photos.

The drain does stick out a little bit.

As you can see, the same. I think they're even the same size as the diff fill plugs.

Thanks heaps for that mate! Turns out the drain plug was a 27mm socket, started to undo the drain plug then realise why.... Saw a lovely crack along the housing where the drain plug goes in along with silicone coming out while I was undoing the bolt :( They must have used a larger bolt to get more thread in I assume after the pricks cracked the housing. Short of welding it, any fixes that you could recommend?

Cheers,

Dion

JB Weld mate. Clean it up, JB Weld it, let it set up and go.
I assume you have some sort of cold weld down there, JB Weld is a name brand here. Good stuff. Otherwise a shop can weld that for you. Don't need to be pretty, just needs to work.

Thanks mate, will give that a crack this arvo. Going to have to try and clean up the area without dropping the oil, can't afford to grab more, lucky its a very slow weep, just not looking forward to getting covered in crap! Any recommendations to make cleaning gearbox oil off of gearbox easy? I've seen oven cleaner is a decent way to do it... Lots of degreaser and a wire brush wouldn't hurt either I guess!

Brake cleaner, it dries residue free.
Start with degreaser, then steel wool or wire brush, then finish with brake cleaner.

Had a crack at cleaning it all up and applying cold weld to the crack and let it sit over night. I couldn't check for leaks this morning, too dark and everything was frozen solid thanks to a damn cold night. I'll have a look after I knock off this arvo. Thanks everyone for their advice on this, hopefully it's saved me a fair bit of money and mucking about!

Its slowed down to next to nothing leaking, but I have ordered those new plugs as advised. I'll still chuck some thread tape on to help seal it all up, fingers crossed it does the trick! I'll take some photo's of my shoddy work on the weekend when the parts arrive and the plugs are installed for anyone that would like to see. I've fallen in love again with my cruiser, time to get the ol girl sorted and ready for some fun!
