Hi folks dumb question from that new English member.

My BJ41 has a 3rd gearshift could someone please tell me what it's for. I've read that there was a model released with 7 forward and 3 reverse gears if thats what I've got then jackpot

If you could point me towards the info I'd be grateful tried the search option to no avail

Thanks

Just paid for my silver star this is an excellent site for info well worth it

Yeah, and maybe a little more information about the truck (year, etc.).

I don't know how to get to 7 forward gears, but I know that to claim 3 reverse gears, Toyota counts as follows:

(1): reverse 2wd high
(2): reverse 4wd high
(3): reverse 4wd low

So, it's essentially one reverse gear in the transmission, with three different combinations in the transfer case. I think the old advertisements for the vehicles with the three speed transmission would claim nine forward gears and three reverse gears, using the same kind of math as shown above. The newer trucks with the four speed manual transmission could then claim 12 forward gears.

The transfer case has two shift forks (high-N-low and 2wd-4wd). The stock configuration uses one lever to actuate both shift forks. I think there is an aftermarked modification (referred to as a "twin stick") that uses one shift lever for each transfer case shift fork. The twin stick could allow you to pick up a fourth transfer case combination: 2wd low. This would mean you could claim four reverse gears and either 12 or 16(!) forward gears, depending whether you have a three speed or four speed transmission.
