When holding the gear lever and going against compression in 3rd down a hill, it has a slight movement up and down (quite rapid) when pushing up lightly against the selector. Thie only happens in 3rd and is very slight, as if something is not quite straight in the transmission.
Any ideas?

if you mean a manual trans, this would not be the best forum cuz all the US 80s were auto. Try the International forum, maybe?

Thanks for the tip, you're right, mine is a 5 speed manual like most of the Landcruisers here.
I think this is probably a question for the OZ site, 80scool.

Thanks

and we have an international forum here too, but I imagine more limited

Here I helped you out.

Does it move with acceleration and deceleration? Could be a broken or loose engine mount (side to side movement) or gearbox mount (fore and aft movement)

Dave

Wear in the shift fork perhaps. My old H55f gets some vibration if I place fingertip pressure on the gear stick while moving.

Thanks guys------only slight up and down movement------only against compression-------only in 3rd.
No movement when accelerating. Movement feels like a shaft or shift selector ring that is out of round.
All mountings 100%.
Could possibly be wear in the shift fork.
